Two Entries for Artist in Winamp Library

I have used Winamp for years with no real problems, however the library keeps splitting one
folder into two entries in artists. All the individual files have been tagged as per the rest of my 20,000+ music files. The artist is Pearl Jam, the main folder containing 9 albums, however Winamp splits into one entry with 5 albums and one with 4. Any ideas?

Hi IAMKLOOT76,

There probably is, or was, something different in the artist and/or album artist tags in the files in the 2 groups. An extra space before, between, or after the words? A spelling error? Something. Look carefully.

If you can't find any differences, maybe something changed since the files were added to the library. Select all the files in both groups, right click on one of the selected files and click on the option to 'Read metadata on selected items'. This forces an update of the library database for the selected files. Close and reopen WA to ensure it using the updated library.

Or you can skip checking the tags and just copy and paste these 2 tags from a file in one group into all the files in the other group. Then select all the updated files and use the right click context menu option to update the library database.

do you do one album per folder or no?

do you use album artist tags, or no?

check your "disc" tags and also check for leading or trailing spaces.

do you have use artist as albumartist turned off, as well as guessing of metadata?

you also might want to highlight all entries and mass re-enter the artist data in one operation.

Hi Aminifu,

Firstly thank you for your speedy reply and advice. I followed your instructions and then added
albums individually to Winamp and all is now in order. It was only a minor irritation and would
not have stopped me enjoying my music, however this solution has satisfied my growing OCD!!

Regards.

one more thing to know...

if you have divergent data, but can't figure out why its divergent, then in your example above it would be helpful to confirm it.

the way to do that is to pick one track from each group then right click and "edit metadata on all selected items" and if "Artist" is blank, then you know that winamp considers the two to not have equal values for some reason, even if they appear to you to have equal values. winamp will show as blank any field where multiple items have divergent data. (or, if the fields are truly blank to begin with)

it would have been interesting to see what was causing this issue.

one exception to the rule above, is if one is truly blank and the other not, then the filled in one will show.
