Bad DirectSound driver

OK, I'm running an HP Pavilion 754n desktop. I'm actually having problems with audio on my computer. There is no sound, and every time I click on volume control, this pops up:

I have tried installing the audio drivers from the HP website, but it hasn't worked. Help, please?

Help here is specific to Winamp and this looks more like a system problem than a Winamp issue. However, I will suggest this...

1. Control Panel (Category View) > Speech Sound & Audio Devices Icon > Sounds & Audio Devices icon
-or-
1. Control Panel (Classic View) > Sounds & Audio Devices icon
2. Audio tab
3. in 'Sound playback' make sure the 'Default device:' drop-down box correctly reflects your sound-chip/soundcard. You may want to do the same for the Voice tab.
4. Apply button > OK button
5. close out of Control Panel
6. close Windows and restart/reboot the computer

Otherwise, please contact either HP support for help. As a FYI, a couple good forums for general tech support are Tech Support Guy and Suggest A Fix. Although they are not affiliated with or endorsed by Nullsoft/Winamp, they have been commonly suggested here at Winamp Forums.

If you get the driver or device issue resolved but still get the "Bad DirectSound driver" error message in Winamp, try the following...

1. Winamp > Ctrl+P (for preferences)
2. Plug-ins > Output
3. double click 'DirectSound output'
4. Driver tab
5. make sure the device in the drop-down list correctly reflects your soundcard

Please do not PM me for tech support. Any request for tech support through PM will be ignored.
