Stange problems with filetype association under Vista

Hello!

I have some very strange problems under Vista SP1 according media filetype association.

Everything worked fine until I reinstalled Vista a few weeks ago. After that playlist files could not get associated to other programs than WMP any more. I thought that this problem was caused by a registry cleaner and I reinstalled Vista another time today.

But now the same problem again (no registry cleaner installed).

First audio files as well as playlist files kept the WMP filetype icons and the context menu entries didn't appear. Doubleclicking on the files caused WMP starting to play them. In the open with list were Winamp at first position and WMP at second.

Then I associated all filetypes (normally just video) to Media Player Classic - Homecinema and deactivated Audio again.

(Before the 2nd Vista reinstallation also MPC - HC couldn't associate playlist files.)

Now suddenly the correct icons appear for audio and playlist files. Audio files get correctly opened with Winamp and also the context menu entries appear.

But playlist files still have no context menu entries and doubleclicking on them now causes Spybot to start scanning it (this problem also appeared before the 2nd reinstallation of Vista). o_O

Has anybody a idea why the filetype association won't work with playlist files?!
I really tried everything after the 1st reinstallation (Vista "Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program" and extman), but nothing worked 100 % correctly.

Is this a bug of Windows/Winamp?

Windows Vista Enterprise (now)
Windows Vista Home Premium (before)
Winamp 5.541 Build 2189 Full

Thanks,
Hannes

Okay, i brought it to work with Extman now (I copied the .mp3 entries and created them for .m3u) but the association through Winamp just doesn't work.

I'm wondering that there are no further comments. This problem seems to be reproduceable.

I have uploaded some further screenshots and registry backups of some filetypes, created with ExtMan.

I'm using Win 7 Professional x86 and Winamp 5.56 Build 2512 btw.

(Could a moderator please fix my typo in the headline? Thanks.)

I also have MPC Homecinema installed from the CCCP codec pack. I wonder if MPC could be a factor?

I just tried it out, it has nothing to do with MPC or any other software.

I installed Windows 7 Professional x86 on VirtualBox, just installed first the Guest Additions and then Winamp Full with default installation settings (haven't done anything else on this freshly installed system). Associated all filetypes except video and tadaaa - exactly the same problem, easily reproduceable.

It's a known problem that's been in WinAmp 5.5x since it was released. Unfortunately, the only way to "fix" the problem at all is to go through your default programs and manually change all the settings you want to WinAmp. I wish there was a script to do it for you. Funny thing is that the file association problem only affects Vista and 7 and not XP.
