What about potential security problems with having a really old program that doesn't get patched?
I mean it is almost 3 years old now. I still use it and love it, but I wonder if it in some ways is a security threat?
It connects to the internet. It has its own internet browser, it runs plugins, it can be made to use windows explorer to open stuff etc...
I don't like having a program like this that isn't being patched...

First, Winamp now is such a niche product that i doubt hackers would bother. Second, the internet browser is just using trident in the system, therefore when microsoft updates your system for security holes, that would, in a sense, get patched as well.

Also, mind you, that probably the weakest link is the browser, it's not like you browse the net with it (I swear I hope you don't). So I would guess it would take downloading some malicious plug-in or malware targeting winamp specifically, or some how some black hat getting a hold of whatever domain names that are associated.

Honestly, I think that's the attitude of Radionomy. Announce new version/features, and fail to deliver because the old version still plays all your music... So not cool.

I'm extremely happy with Winamp 5.666, that my fear of a new, updated Winamp is the current plugins not being able to work for it and we'll all have to start over from scratch. And that most of the talented coders moved on to other things by now.

Winamp 5.8 will still be able to use plugins as it's mostly a refresh with all licensed and aol based stuff removed or replaced.

It's prima facie Koopa. Be honest, do the majority use Winamp for audio more, or video more? That's not some unknowable stat. It's just obvious audio is the answer.

This is not a knock on jtfe, it's just a similar obvious statement of fact that the majority don't use it either knowingly or unknowingly. What is in it, or is it doing, that u think the majority is flocking to?? It's absurd to suggest it's possible a majority do, just as most don't use any skin not in the official distribution, which u seem to also know is true.

As it turns out, 5.8 leaked, and jtfe still works in it, so the whole argument was pointless and moot anyway, but unfortunately Winamp has all but died in the interim of this stagnation, this needless paralysis, partially bc it's waiting on things that didn't matter (bc they still work!) as it happens. What a shame.

Many more important missing features btw, like art and metadata, have been missing in 5.666 forever now, and are still missing in 5.8 and yet 5.8 is out.

I'm sure u guys will get what u want in wacup, at least until the lawyers step in, which I hope doesn't happen but that is the nature of business.

I don't know about Winamp 5.8, but I've been using Winamp 5.666 for years now. Looks like that site earlier in the thread has been shut down but looks like Softpedia has a copy up. In fact 5.8 is there too.

What's the legal status of this?

It is sad to see that the best audio player in the history, Winamp, dies without good ending. There are some alternatives like AIMP on Windows or Audacious on Linux but still, I miss Winamp!

What is the point of keeping secrets about it?
Yeah it's just a media player, but its the best one of all time.
Give me an update that fixes the location of my player, it keeps
moving out of the docked corner after close/open. I found a fix
here in the forums but it didn't last long. My minimize/close buttons
are so small its like trying to click on a nats' ass to close the app.
When reinstalling I would like to not install a FLAC plugin, they
should just play.
I'm guessing there is no reliable way for them to make money
from Winamp so it probably is dead. Why spend time on it
just to lose money, right? It's really sad because the community
is so large and wants it really bad.
