Icedawg, it really depends on each recording - ie. some have too much bass/treble/whatever. Best way: make your own presets (and SAVE them) for each track/album.

I agree for the most part with watadoo. Keep in mind that room accoustics and speaker placement also play a major roll in your eq settings (what might sound good in the car will sound awful in the house).
The best suggestions I have had is to determine what frequency sounds annoying, and drop that one out a bit. Personally, I like a lot of bass (maybe cause I play one) so I usually pump up the bottom end a bit. Keep playing with it untill it sounds good to you. |

It's not a science, but an art. It's all about what sounds good to you.
Generally speaking, the sliders on the left side of centre are fow the lower frequencies (ie bass), the ones in the middle are for mid-range (human voice is around 1k), and the ones on the right are for the highs. Usually the most annoying frequencies are near the mid range, thus most peoples home stereos and such have a v shape to the eq. Too much bass will make it sound muddy, too much treble and it will sound tinny. Like I said, it's an art. I have been mixing sound for about 7 years now, and am still learning! ![]() |

As everybody said there are many factors, including speaker type, size, placement, and more. On Winamp's EQ there is a button for presets. If you push Preset -> Load you will get a menu of pre-saved EQ pre-sets. Pesonally I use "Full Bass & Treble" as my Default setting, tweaking it as needs for various songs.
If you have the EQ on you can also select the Auto-Load feature. Have the Auto button on the EQ in the on position and Winamp will load a unique EQ setting for each song (as long as you have saved it first...Preset -> Save -> Auto-Load Preset). You can also save the Default setting so any song that for which you haven't saved a unique preset will revert the EQ back to the default. |
