Winamp resets to default settings on load

Here's what's going on:

Running Winamp 5.06, I set up all my preferences (DirectSound, taskbar icon, load metadata direclty upon loading winamp), and everything is dandy. I run it in the classic skin.

Now, often, seemingly at random, when I load mp3's into winamp through queueing or opening a single mp3 from my harddrive (either by double clicking, or for example clicking on an http link to the mp3 on my hard drive, as is the case when using Google Desktop) winamp will load itself with 100% default settings, discarding all my set preferences except for the classic skin. The windows will be placed in default manner (winamp/qeuilizer/playlist all in equal rectangles one on top of the other), it will set itself back to waveOut(extremely annoying), and I find myself having to reset all my preferences from scratch.

This seems only to happen when I load mp3's directly into winamp, not when I start it up on its own.

I've searched the forums, read the FAQs and Greatest Hits, and can't find anything similar to this.

Any help on why this is happening is appreciated, cause right now I'm flat out of ideas.
