Change "Winamp media file" file association description
OK, in Windows Explorer (in Windows XP), all files associated with Winamp have the description "Winamp Media File".
The trouble with this is that if you try to sort by type, it doesn't; i.e. all the WAVs, MP3s, etc are all still mixed up. If you go into Tools>Folder Options>File Types, select the "WAV" extension in the list, click Advanced, and change the description from "Winamp media file" to "Winamp WAV file", the description of EVERY extension associated with Winamp changes, which isn't very helpful. I don't remember Win98 exhibiting this behaviour - presumably XP handles file associations differently. Anybody got any idea how to do this - Ideally I'd like to have descriptions like "WinAmp WAV File", "Winamp MP3 File" etc... Thanks Joolz |

UP... I have the same exact problem but I couldn't understand how to resolve in the threads linked... I'm interested in changing description to make wxp sort by tipe work correctly, not in changing icons. I think this is a huge problem (personally I think it is a real bug) and it's really strange there is not any topic about it since 2001...
Thanks |

it's not a bug, it's how the associations are organised in the registry. all files associated to Winamp are related to a single Winamp.File entry in the systm registry which is where the description, etc is maintained and how to deal with associated filetypes. it's because of this centralised method that all file types with Wianmp have the same description, etc. so it's not a bug, it's just the way that it's implemented (and is easy to support/maintain from the code base view since you only have to modify one registry entry say to alter the default action from play to enqueue).
it's a double-edged sword over easy registry management for the program (winamp) and for the user -daz |

OK thank you for your help in irc, if someone other is interested, the solution is associating the extension in hkey_classes_root with a copy of the entry winamp.file (for exapmle winamp.file.mp3) with changed description
![]() but it's important not going anymore in winamp file association properties |
