Winamp crashes when adding media in library

Hi , i have googled everywhere and searched the entire forum but there has been no solution to the crash. Its like everytime i try to add the media source which is on my built-in hard disk into the library winamp crashes.
As per the searching and forum suggestions in other threads , i also tried downgrading to 5.5 and upgrading to 5.7 beta but still the problem remained unsolved. So i am now just posting the error's technical information available right after crash. Following is the crash report generated by microsoft windows.

You need to help us with an info tool report (so we can see what plugins you have)

You have the "best" version there. v5.6.6.3516 is the last Winamp released.

We also need to have an idea of what type of files you are adding. And the exact method you use to add those files (i.e. drag and drop? Or via a menu?)
and preferably a link to a sample file that causes the crash.

For reference, I spent much of the weekend various audio file types to my library. So there is no fundamental bug - it will be an interaction of plugins causing your crash.

It's a Winamp Info Report and not an Info Tool report, I may consider to write a tool which makes reports related to the used Info Tool version. (could be called Winamp Info Tool Info Tool)

This might solve your issue. It may relate to inmp3 plugin. I had the same issue where Winamp build 3516 would crash on some specific mp3 with cover art embedded. I used the previous inmp3 in Winamp build 3512 and replaced my current one. Now Winamp scans the library and plays without errors

Hi Raj_09,

The large number of changes (bug fixes and improvements) in the last 3 builds of version 5.666 have made Winamp more sensitive to certain structural errors in mp3 files. Reverting to an older version of in_mp3.dll may give some relief for this particular issue, but would also reintroduce other bugs that were fixed. 'Fixing' the mp3 files that have structural errors would be better in the long run, imo.

in_mp3.dll should not crash on those files and going back to the version from b3512 is the correct solution for those experiencing such issues (though it leaves things open to crashing in some cases with files with no genre but that's unlikely to be an issue for most people compared to the crash b3516 introduced).

I am a Dot Net programmer so I was intrigued when I ran across a problem. I added a large chunk of music to my library and every time I opened Winamp it crashed. Since it was a large batch of music I spent sometime whittling it down until I figured out that it was "Attack" by System of a Down that was causing it to crash.

Winamp will not add the file to the library, and it crashes when you attempt to play the file with Winamp. Though it plays fine with any other player. I checked the meta-data and could find nothing un-ordinary.

I found this thread and created an account just to post this. As a programmer it seems weird that a single file could crash the system so easily?? Or that so many people could be having this same problem. If there is a solution I would love to have it. I am running the newest version no addons in Windows 8.1

the solution is stated in my post above, you have to revert the version of in_mp3.dll to an older version from build 3512.

I think you'll find that Winamp is written in C/C++ and therefore easier to have crashes. Dot Net does a lot of background nanny work in keeping an eye on memory pointers and so on to try and stop you making this kind of slip. Programming in C requires a lot more double checking. (And sometimes it can just be weird as to the unexpected side effects....)

Yeah. I'm not one of those people who claim that Dot Net is somehow better. You are right it is a lot easier, but not nearly as flexible. I do almost all Database work, where server speed is always more important than code execution speed. I've tried to get into C++, but never got past simple 3D constructs. Life doesn't give me the time

No plugins as far as i remember

Good day,

I am having problems with adding my entire music folder into Winamp.

I have many folders [over 200GB worth of CD's and Vinyl], and when I try to add them all at once [through File-->Add Media to Library-->selecting Music folder on my E:\ drive-->clicking the "DO this in Background" (and also tried unchecking that checkmark) = same result], at 30% mark, it crashes Winamp.

I do NOT want to sit here for over 4 hours, adding each CD manually into Winamp.

Is there a workaround that DOESN'T require me to install a new program that MIGHT fix the problem [MAYBE]?

I REALLY DON'T want to use Windows Media Player crap... but if it does what I need it to...

Does anyone have this problem?

Thank you guys, sorry i stopped using the registered mail as well as winamp, and I will try removing the mp3 dll mentioned by dr_dro and the other person.
I will also look forward to using newer version, whatever the link below will lead me to.

PS: I just hope a new winamp version for Windows 10 is coming. Any solid updates on it though? I have saved a lot of money to donate to Winamp, or use it buy a new version.

Using Windows10 and with http://meggamusic.co.uk/winamp/Winamp_Download.htm
installed over Winamp 5.666 it's working...
