BUTT to Shoutcast on Mac Mini doesn't work

For what it's worth, I have discovered that BUTT, the little piece of software that can be used as a stream source doesn't work with the Mac Mini. It's all to do with the Soundcard set up it seems.

does the mac mini have a [line in] ?

I cant imagine it doesnt. I use BUTT and so do all my DJs. Ive never had a problem. I would bet you are experiencing a user error.

Could be a user error. However.
On the Mac Mini, OS X Yosemite, (10.10.1) the Line In socket does indeed exist. BUTT (pun) it's a Powered Mic input. So output from say Winamp, fed to BUTT, fed to Shoutcast .....
So, supposing I can feed something into it, how will that help get BUTT to see the music and stream it to shoutcast?

So what's the obvious setup I'm missing then?

youll need to go to your audio settings and select the input to be [line in].

This is not a BUTT issue. Its a OS / hardware issue of [potentially] not being able to or not having a line in [input]

If there is anyone else using a Mac Mini, I'd like to hear how they solved it.

Nicecast doesn't have a problem. BUTT does. It's not a hardware/OS "problem". it's just that BUTT isn't designed to handle what ever it is that is built into the Mini.

what is "it" that is producing no sound?

Is it just me or are shoutcast users getting dumber?

hmmm. Ok, let me rephrase this.

I can play tracks with Winamp. Fine.
I can run butt. Fine.
... butt there is no activity in the Butt VU meter. Butt (it) therefore does not stream any sound from Winamp, or anything producing sound, to the Shoutcast server (sc_serv)

I'm not sure about the advice to set your input in BUTT to "line in" ... as far as I can tell

a) you are using MAC winamp to play music
b) you are using MAC BUTT to stream the music

IN "windows" terms, in BUTT, you'd want to select the "stereo mix" or "what you here" source - which is more or less a "loopback" of whatever is being sent to the audio device

As I am not a MACophile, I have no idea if what I say makes any sense to you, or if indeed such a "audio source" device even exists in the MAC

There seems to be some relevant info here - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=276754

Is it just me or are shoutcast users getting dumber?

Oh well. I'll have to give up and find something other than BUTT. It just simply doesn't work with the Mac Mini.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

Ok I think I see the issue.

Im so used to DJ setups that I over looked something.

When I tell you to select [line in] I was assuming you were going about it as if you were DJn. As in going [OUT] of your dj mixing board and [INTO] your computers [line in]. I have a feeling that is no the case here.

You will need something like this

https://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/

or this

http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/14067/soundflower

to grab the signal. BUTT will not just grab audio from a program such as winamp or itunes.

Did you even look at the link I supplied before giving up? Bryon's links link to two of the solutions mentioned in the link I supplied

BUTT will work with the Mac Mini, you just need extra tools (unless those programs don't run in the Mini, of course, but I'm guessing you haven't even looked)

I did look at all the links thanks. Why you would assume I wouldn't I don't know.

anyway. hijackpro is by the same company as Nicecast. and if it works as well as Nicecast it's pretty good. However, the whole thing is starting to get cluttered.
The bottom line is, I was looking for something that would take a music/track collection, however arranged, even Winamp -> BUTT -> Shoutcast's sc_serv -> internet.

Now it's looking like to do that I need yet another program in the middle. So in this instance, I may as well simply use Nicecast and forget the rest. It streams directly to the internet, and will work as a bandaid solution.

BUTT: "The main purpose of BUTT is to stream live audio data from your computers Mic or Line input"
Nicecast: "Broadcast any audio to the internet"

Doesn't mean that

it just means that BUTT isn't designed to do what you want it to do.

Is there any other reason you wanted to use BUTT rather than Nicecast?
