Must....restrain...myself...

Okay, I've been wandering around the forums and attempting to count all the peope who winamp 5 for all the wrong reasons: they didn't uncheck options in the install, they didn't uncheck the AOL ads, they didn't check the w4ff|3 maker in the syrup section, they forgot to rotate thier tires and now they have to buy a whole new set...blah blah blah.

Is it wrong for me to go and tell these people to shut the fuck up? Should I just keep me to myself? the n00bs are killing me. It's a burden to have to tell half the n00bs that they're morons when I'd rather welcome them to thier ridiculous opinions.
Anyway..is it right or wrong to bash stupid n00bs who start a new "I hate wa5 cause my girlfriend left me" every five seconds?

Use a large shovel.

The search for the ultimate signature continues apace. I have journeyed from the peaks of Nepal to the depths of oceanic trenches. I have crossed deserts, jungles, swamps, savannas, steppes and frozen wastelands. I have consulted with seers, swamis, sages, scholars and savants. The peregrination proceeds purposefully.

There will always be newbies around forums like these, and just because you know something they dont doesnt give you the right to insult them.

If they bother you that much maybe you should just say offline.

they all don't bother me, it's just the arrogant ones who just come in to say "This sucks" and troll for supporters. Course, no one supports their threads because they're all too busy making thier own threads.

I don't hate all n00bs, just the ones that are blatantly stupid. Like me. Because I hate myself.

n00bs? Where? I don't see no stinkin' n00bs!

Seriously, I just filter everyone around me, including in real life. If there is even a chance that someone will be annoying and not have a redeeming value, then I'm immediately blind to them, like they're not there at all. In fact, I have no idea what your talking about with n00bs, because I've only seen maybe two in the past several days on all the WA boards. Traffic's been kinda slow on this side of my filter.

In all, I would suspect that I only see about 10% of the people in front of me at any given moment. Believe me when I say the filter prevents a lot of stress in my life.

(BTW...I still voted "no" because you're not one the people I filter out, I refuse to call you a malicious twerp, and to be honest I'm not against other people burning n00bs anyway. To each his/her own. )

Dont feed the trolls.

Trolls are better off being killed with a razor sharp wit and rapier like intelligence than being fed even more fuel for their fire.

Hit them with clever, intelligent and sometimes darkly witty answers and they soon wither up and die, never to return, give them an equal and opposite response to their original gripe and they will come back to haunt you time and time again.

So ends todays lesson from Jones' charm school.

I'm a n00b here, but some of the posts Fickle refers to are just blatently offensive.

@Fickle: Use your best judgement, but do read the posts carefully. Some may have a legitimate complaint.

Also you may need a bigger shovel.

Ummm... My reference was made to the trolls invading the WA5 support forum, not you.

I don't find you offensive at all. Matter of fact I agree with most of what you say. Just be patient with those who don't agree with you, but have a legitimate complaint.

Now for trolls... ummm... the loader?

There is a difference between the n00bs ...
There are the ones who think. These ones know they dont know nothing (/me confused here), but as they think, they make suitable questions, and/or search the forums to find the answer ... also they are very polite, and must be no problem with them.
On the other hand, there are the ones that just don't have enough gray stuff on their heads, and make stupid questions, with not-that-polite statements ... These ones are the ones tha should burn in hell ...
For these, u'll need 2 or 3 big shovelss ... HAHUEHUAEUAHUhe

this is what I'm talking about. I don't mess with the real people because they're not arrogant asshole who think they know it all. It's the fake people that get on my nerves. The ones who are saying," Winamp 5 sucks because it's too heavy." when all they have to do is look before they install shit they don't need. Those people need to take a flying leap off a high wall.

Aye, enroll in Jones' charm school.

Tactfully saying "you're a dumbass" in other words while still making them feel warm and fuzzy is anti-troll food.

Example:

One of my favorite SHOUTcast type questions is when the DNAS responds with "yp.shoutcast.com gave extended error (please type something else in the stream title/description field)"

Bad answer:
You're a dumbass.

Good (or at least better) answer:

To fix the "yp.shoutcast.com gave extended error (please type something else in the stream title/description field)" error, you need to type something else in the stream title/description field.

Check out the results from a SHOUTcast forum search on 'stream title field'.

Look for a post by airkick titled:
"Plz type something else in the stream title"

Note: Other search criteria may yield more results.

the problem is, they aren't tech questions. they're blatant "I'm right and you guys suck." posts. I stay away from the tech forums because I don't know what I'm doing unless it's really obvious, and I suck at helping people when I don't know what they're talking about.

The ones who piss me off are the ones who give an intelligent-sounding and well worded post but STILL don't have the first idea of what they're talking about. You sort of expect better, when their spelling and grammar is actually good.

The "I'm right and you guys suck" attitudes are exactly what I filter out. I don't even need the "Ignore" setting...they just disappear before my eyes.

I know what you mean about the techie stuff. I'm no Winamp guru, but I've studied audio encoding for years, so I try to jump on those questions when I see 'em. I still get burned with "I'm right and you guys suck" sometimes, even on a tech question. That's life.

And exactly how many people online today actually show 4th grade English skills? Seems like a pretty low number to me. Although more people here know how to spell than other places, but that is beside the point.

There's kind of a higher frequency of people who can spell here, than in most other places I've seen.

And about the n00bs with 'holier than thou' attitudes -- Does someone named 'Wordsworth' ring a bell?

Yes, that Wordsworth fellow rather annoyed me with his arrogant post. And another n00b, I forget his name, started a thread with the fact that he was banned from his forum, and that this forum would "have to do" or something along those lines..Pretty arrogant or idiotic, whichever way you look at it.

He probably could have enlightened me about poetry. Then again a four year old could have done that. My mind just isn't abstract enough for that. I would have liked to see him argue poetry with a couple of friends who are just about finished with their english majors. One who pretty much got a free ride through school from her writings.

That ought to teach him some humility

Geez...I had (on purpose) forgotten about that guy. How presumptuous can you get? Some of the best poetry I've read in many years is right here in these forums. Did he ever post any poetry himself...I mean since he claimed to be so good and all?

That kinda nails the point: The biggest newbie mistake is claiming to know more than you do...being a Newbie Know-It-All. If you're serious about wanting to fit into any forum as a new member: ask questions, answer only the ones you're sure of, and always be respectful of the more established members.

Why do so many people find that hard to understand?

No, he never did post any, I know because I've checked the Poems thread every day.
And English/Japanese is my major, art my secondary. I would've loved to rip the guts out of anything he posted.
