cd hole diameter?

hi,
why is the hole im the middle of a cd 15 mm? why not 16mm or 14mm?
there's a real reason, but i can't find it with google. any ideas?

It's like the width of railroad tracks. They just have to agree on something, or else only Sony players can play Columbia CDs etc.

Probably because its very close to the average width of the tip portion of your finger.

Correctamundo. Philips and Sony were the two companies in
question, and Philips chose the inside diameter to match the exact
same size of the Dutch dime -- at 18mm, one of the smallest size
coins currently in circulation in the world (if not the smallest).

I'd have to agree that Philips and Sony had to set standards. Now for the size of the diameter hole, there has to be a set size for the entire diameter.
Plus there are other standards such as the diameter of a cd 1/2 that size thats so they can fit in jewel cases that are 3 1/2 inch. Why did then make 3 1/2 inch floppies? Why not 3 1/4 inch?

I have a coin from South Africa it's one whatever the hell it is that they call their currency and it fits the hole of the CD perfectly, I just measured it and the coin is 14.80mm and the hole on the CD is 15.00mm.
