Treat every file format as an individual one - and not only some of them

and acknowledge this conclusion below [backed by my empirical data from that thread and confirmed there by the user TheGuyinShades]:

because some of the file formats are added by Winamp to the Registry as the same "Winamp.File" value, they create a hard to break group in the Registry. Membership in that group makes every format in it inherit the same settings- like an icon. And so when the user is trying to change icon for one, the change occurs also for all of the other files


If you want to test this claim out then try this: change by whatever means the icon for the e.g. MP3 and FLAC and then for APE and M4A [using of course 4 different icons]. Assuming that all of these formats are associated on your Windows with Winamp, you will get an individual icon for MP3 and FLAC, but for APE and M4A you will get one and the same. And that is because APE and M4A function in the Registry as "Winamp.File", while MP3 functions there as "Winamp.File.MP3" while FLAC as "Winamp.File.FLAC"

Why, just why did they make those poor choices when then were splitting files into two categories?

This makeshift portable Winamp http://forums.winamp.com/showpost.ph...5&postcount=16 looks like an answer to all those issues with changing icons for individual audio files associates with Winamp


Because in theory after putting it in lets say

C:\Program Files (x86)\Winamp

and then associating one-by-one each format with EXE form this folder - changing icons should be piece of cake


I surely will try this in the future, surely when I will be nearing by transgression to Windows 11

Hmm, there's a HKCR\Winamp.File.M4A key in my registry, along with all other Winamp-capable extensions (see screenshot).

Monkey's Audio APE isn't supported by default and requires a third-party plugin, so it's possible that said plugin registers APE under Winamp.File

You should try using the Winamp Icon Pack(s) in association with the JTFE plugin (which came with Winamp up to v5.666)

Thank you very much

I will add this as another alternative, I try it out when I will install Windows once more [i.e. hopefully years from now]
