Make Big Bento look as good in 4K as in 1080p GUIDE

Hello all,

Here it is, you one-stop guide to make Big Bento look awesome in 4K. Big Bento was made for 1080p and technically, Big Bento Modern was made for 4K (sorta) but it has some issues so I prefer Big Bento.

Here's what we're going to do:

- resize Big Bento to 150% under "Scaling"

- Set up the Skin Font Mapper under Preferences -> Skins -> Modern Skins

- Change Antialiasing from "0" to "1" in *3* separate xml files.

When we're finished, we will have changed and resized the Songticker and File Info fonts, rendered them with anti-aliasing, and rendered the tabs buttons in anti-aliasing as well.

Ready?

1. Go to Preferences -> Skins -> Modern Skins and under the Font Rendering tab, click the box for "Use skin font mapper." Now click on the "Configure skin font mapping..." button.

Choose "Arial" under the Map Font drop down.
Choose (for now) "Arial Bold" under the "Into" drop down. Change from 100% to 108%. Watch the songticker. Click the "New" and then the "Set" buttons. Voila. Nothing much to see here yet but we've changed the Songticker and File Info fonts. Close out of Preferences.

Now were going to turn on antialiasing for the new mapped font as well as turn on antialiasing for the tabs buttons. Go to C:\ -> Program Files (x86) -> Winamp -> Skins -> Big Bento -> xml

In this directory choose the following files and copy and paste them into the same directory in order to back them up in case something goes wrong. In Windows 10 & 11 the copied file should look like "player-normal-mcv - Copy.xml."

You will likely need to change the permissions on the following files:

player-normal-mcv.xml
player-normal-sui.xml
player-normal-group.xml

For each file, Right-click and choose "Properties" and then the "Security" tab. For each file I chose the Group "users" under Group name. Choose "Edit", click the "Full Control" box, then "Apply" for each file. You're done here.

Open each of these files, right-click and choose "open with" -> Notepad. In Notepad, choose Edit -> Find and in the search box, type "antialias" without the quotes. Use the down-arrow next to the box and in each instance of "antialias" change "0' to "1." Do this in all 3 files and save them.

Now either hit F5 or Exit Winamp and restart. You should already notice a huge improvement in how this skin looks with a better choice in Songticker and File Info font plus antialiasing implemented on the new font and on the tabs buttons. It will look even better once you rescale the Big Bento Window but we'll save that as the last step.

Open Winamp Preferences again and under "General Preferences" in the left-hand pane, choose "Playlist." On the right under "Playlist Editor Appearance" change the Playlist font size to "14." Under the "Use Font" dropdown, choose Segoe UI Semibold. The change to your Media Library playlist windows will be immediate. It is a shame you can't choose this font as a font mapper substitute in the "Use font mapper" step above.

Ok - Last step. Right-Click the main window and choose Window Settings -> Scaling -> 150%. Use the attached screenshot to adjust Big Bento's Media Library and Main Player window sizes to taste.

You're done! Feel free to play with alternate fonts under the "Configure skin font mapping..." step above. You won't get the same choices as you did for changing the Playlist font directly.

ENJOY the new look!

Another view, showing surrounding wallpaper. Here, the file info text window is shown with fonts anti-aliased along with the songticker text anti-aliased. Note that the tabs buttons text is also anti-aliased. The Media Library is in playlist editing mode. Running on a 4K display, Big Bento is the same relative size it would be without scaling on a 1080p display.

Another note: If you weren't aware, in the main player window the timer and vital statistics (quality and bandwidth) can't be adjusted - they are made by graphics in the Big Bento -> window directory. The only way to enlarge them is by scaling Big Bento as I have done in the very first post, from 100% to 150%.

Yet another note: If you are running a 1080p display, then you can skip the last instruction regarding rescaling to 150% unless you want a really, really BIG Big Bento.

Here's my 4K display. Winamp Forums now only allows 1MB for JPG so I had to figure out a way to whittle down the display to get it down to under the limit. Here, Winamp is in the ML playlist edit mode. Windows desktop scaling is at the default 125% for my LG 4K display.

Big Bento color theme 138 - 1337 | Orange from the Color Themes pack running alongside the Black Orange Shards Chrome theme running in Edge makes a great combo in 4K. Like the wallpaper? Ask me here and I'll tell you where to get it. Winamp shown playing Blackwood FM on Shoutcast!

Make Big Bento look as good in 4K as in 1080p GUIDE

I watched a 4K Tokyo night walk YouTube video and on the 1080P stream you can't see the textures of the street while it shows up in the 4K stream. I was surprised by the difference in compression.

While I'm really pleased with this LK 4K monitor, having had it a couple of years now, 4K just doesn't translate as well to watching movies and TV Shows on something like my Samsung 75" Q80A TV. In fact, I went back and eliminated all the 4K versions and went back to my original 1080p rips from Blu-Ray. I could never eliminate from the 4K versions the weird stutter they produce no matter how you adjust via the judder and blur reduction section under "Clarity" on the Q80A. We sat and watched "Interstellar" in both 4K and 1080p streamed from my server via Plex and frankly, there just isn't any Earth-shattering difference IMHO.

That said, you *can* tell the difference between 4K and 1080p on a 4K monitor without the issues I mentioned above. Large panels are nice but not without their problems.

If you are testing 5.9.1, save the following xml files in Big Bento first:

player-normal-group.xml
player-normal-mcv.xml
player-normal-sui.xml

Once you've installed 5.9.1, copy and paste these files back into Big Bento's xml folder and all will be well.
