modes in cd ripping

let me preface by saying yes, i have Pro....

i wanna rip cds at 192 KBPS.
no more. no less.

yet it's stuck on VBR and it's greyed out so i can't change it.
I HATE VBR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what gives?

You don't say what you are trying to rip to? MP3? M4A?

if it's for mp3 encoding, from the quality dropdown, using --alt-preset-insane, --alt-preset-cbr or any of the non alt-preset prefixed options (which allow for changing all of the options) is the way to select a CBR encoding (though really ABR or VBR is the better option unless you've some really specific need to generate CBR files).

There must be some kind of "specific needs" going on if the rips are at a low 192kbps. I assume this is being used on a cheap MP3 player with even cheaper headphones.

That's the odd things with personal preferences... there are some strange choices going on out there...

Yep - that one has it too. (Have a look). Them old iPods didn't have much room, so the same tricks had to be pulled like with MP3 to adjust the file sizes.

I assume you have now solved your puzzle thanks to DrO?
