Thanks. How did you do it? Did you just make copies of those files, store them somewhere else, do the reinstall, then copy them back in to the Winamp directories? Everything worked ok?

I have a copy of all my plugins, so immediately after reinstall of winamp, I reinstalled all plugins so that when I overwrite winamp.ini, it doesnt scream at me ;-) (no mismatch between the config file and the program itself).

With the bookmarks, I simply also overwrote the the existing file and all the bookmarks came back up.
the question is "will it hold"?

now that i'm back (joys of holiday), there's nothing wrong with the winamp.bm file uploaded, i believe the issue came from a corruption of the bm_col_title and bm_col_filename entries in gen_ml.ini (is similar to an issue seen with the podcasts directory view disappearing).

i'm guessing neither of you have copies of winamp.ini and gen_ml.ini from the messed up install now?

as for doing a proper backup and restore this details everything needed.

Thanks, DrO. No, I haven't done a reinstall yet and I still have my GEN_ML.INI. I checked the two entries you mentioned and they're both set to 0. Here's a copy of the file, given a .TXT extension. Thanks for any thoughts.

Havent tested but it sounds very likely this is the cause of bm "disappearing"! I mean columns width turning to 0!!! if this is it, at least we have a way of fixing it!!!

i've modified ml_bookmarks natively to reset the width of the columns if less than or equal to zero when loading the view. in the meantime if you move the mouse to the top left of the bookmarks view (where the header is) you should see the cursor change which will indicate it can be resized. if not then just change those two values to 400 and 240 to get the view restored to default widths. and will add it's nothing to do with the plugin this thread is about

One thing I miss is an icon left to the bookmark categories in the library tree. Simply using the main bookmark icon would be a great solution too.

Otherwise, a very useful plug-in.

ML Bookmark Categoriser v0.8.8
  • Fixed icon not showing next to child bookmark views (from changes made in the last release)
get v0.8.8

There you go koopa, now restores it to work how it used to before the required new version changes

Would it be possible to scroll up/down mlbookmark window ?? Concerning long bookmarks list I find it quite annoying to scroll down my list by clicking that small black arrow at the bottom...

sorry but you've lost me as the list can be scrolled up/down easily via the vertical scrollbar or via a mousewheel. unless you mean something else and i'd then need a screenshot/more information to follow you better.

ah that menu, that's not something we've got any control over to my knowledge (and from the lack of information i found when looking into it previously). i believe it depends on the OS's settings as to how it'll deal with such large menus and will happen with and without this plugin installed.

this is the main reason for people categorising their bookmarks to make the main menu smaller.

The plugin is doing just what I wanted, Thanks! but there seems to be a bug...

It's recreating empty folder sets, of the main folders, again and again. Everytime I go back to the Bookmarks menu, via 'right clicking' on main Winamp (v5.552) window, I find another empty duplicate empty set.

The first set works fine, with bookmarks sorted properly and usable. By the way, all my bookmarks are Internet radio stations, no local files at all.

Any fixes will be welcome...

Screenshot:
http://i40.tinypic.com/4l3j92.jpg

Thanks for the plugin!

what plugin are you using to have the 'lyrics' entry in the main right-click menu as i'd say that's the most likely cause of breaking this plugin's code to know what items it needs to remove/update.

It was 'gen.lyrics'. I've uninstalled it, but its still duplicating empty folders.

Thanks for all the updates, DrO!

Still wishing there was a way to sort all the stations in a subcategory in alphabetical order. Like clicking the Bookmark Title bar or Select All > R Click > Sort by > Ascending or Descending.

finally gotten around to looking into the issue from http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....80#post2533380 and i'm able to reproduce it. i don't know if it's something that changed in one of the recent versions or not but the whole handling of the menus is badly messed up from what i'm seeing so i think i'll have to come up with a different way.

i've re-worked the menu handling and it seems to be working reliably in all of the cases i can throw at it (including testing with some of the winamp.bm+bmc combinations that had issues in the past).

anyone who has been having issues with bookmarks in a submenu please pm or post in this thread and i'll send a test build (only need a few just to check it's not working just on my dev machines )

have started working on this including some additional tweaks to the menu handling fixes though still need to get it to sort the sub-menu items so it matches with the library view option. so i should have something in a few weeks that allows sorting of items in the main view and in the category views.

may even get the drag & drop handling finally re-enabled in the category views as well

ML Bookmark Categoriser v1.0
  • Implemented a workaround for a bug in gen_dragndrop.dll breaking Winamp's bookmark handling (add bk_dnd_hack=1 in the plugin's
section in your winamp.ini if experiencing the issue)
  • Fixed double-click on the category tree items not working (common handler implemented for clicking and keyboard actions in the
    tree)
  • Reworked the handling of Winamp's menus when placing the bookmarks into categories (hopefully this will be more reliable now)
  • Added right-click menu actions to a->z or z->a sort items in the bookmark views (that includes category views!)
  • Drag & drop re-ordering of items in the categories is enabled now the plugin can correctly handle those situations!
  • Some heavy code refactoring/clean-ups to allow for changes to be made to rectify existing limitations with the plugin installed
(d&d being disabled was the main one)
  • Added winampUninstallPlugin(..) support (cleans up after itself when uninstalled from Winamp's preferences)
  • Localisation support (example file is in the installer)
get v1.0

Nicely done sir! No more multiplying folders. No other issues so far.

DrO, any chance this plug-in's functionality could be extended to subscribed RSS podcast feeds as well?

thanks for the confirmation that it's working correctly now (was a weird issue that was causing it to fail in the first place).

i don't think there's an easy way to add in something like that to the RSS feeds - it's tricky enough manipulating the bookmarks plugin and that's a relatively simple compared to the podcast one. without checking i can't be for certain but i'm not going to commit myself to definitely looking into it currently.

ML Bookmark Categoriser v1.1
  • Fixed issue where the media library tree items were alphabetically sorted incorrectly (mainly with localised installs)
  • Fixed edit bookmark/ctrl+e deleting bookmark entries incorrectly
  • Increased size of the bookmark category dialog for better localisation
get v1.1

Thanks to Koopa for finding and helping test the issues fixed in this release (just proved how late night coding isn't good at times )

My first time really using this plug-in, using ver 1.1. I am wondering if there is a help file or web page explaining how to use it? When I right-click on a bookmark in the right pane, enter a category in the Edit Bookmark Category dialog, and then click OK, it copies the bookmark name to that category in the left pane but not the Bookmark Filename/URL so it's not playable there. I know I'm doing something wrong but don't know what. Thanks.

Hmm...scratch that previous message. Now the URL's ARE there in the categories and they play fine. Not sure what happened (or what I THOUGHT happened!).

I see that putting a bookmark into a category does a copy rather than a move. Is it safe to then delete the bookmark item from the parent 'Bookmarks' folder?

deleting a bookmark from either the root or in a category view will completely remove it from your bookmark list so you're really not going to want to do that as the plugin effectively just makes the category views a filter of the root bookmark view.

i can see why you might have thought it was a copy but it isn't (as that'd cause a mass of issues with winamp's native behaviour and what other apps expect when parsing the bookmark file [winamp.bm]).

and i should do a page on how to use/setup the plugin but just need to find the time to do that...

Ah, thanks -- understanding the category view as a filter of the root view helps me see what's going on. So the root view will continue to always display ALL the bookmarks.

Am I correct that a drag-and-drop from the bookmark on the right pane to the category on the left doesn't directly insert that bookmark into that category? Instead, it only triggers the "Edit Bookmark Category" dialog where you then need to enter the category name?

So inserting a bookmark into a category is done either through this drag-and-drop method, or by right-clicking on the bookmark and choosing "Edit bookmark(s) category"?

Thanks much for this plug-in.

Uninstalling and reinstalling

For various reasons I need to uninstall this plugin, and then will re-install it a day or two later. If I do an uninstall, is there a way I can save my categories and their bookmarks so when I re-install they'll be restored?

yes. don't uninstall, just stop it from loading. basically winamp loads anything in the plugins directory with a *.dll filename, so rename ml_bkmk.dll to ml_bkmk.dlx while winamp is closed and tada- you've functionally "disabled" the plugin temporarily until you rename it back to .dll

Request: A little SmartView Query Language love.

you can safely use the uninstall option from the plugins page and if done that way there is a prompt (from the plugin itself using the uninstall support that we only discovered in 5.5 despite being there since 5.0) if you want to keep settings or not.

Thank you so much DrO! So far as I can tell, right-clicking to sort bookmarks in the subcategory works exactly like it should. I've been waiting a long time for this, and the wait was well worth it. Now all my bookmarks are neatly aligned in order. Well done DrO
