Winamp runs perfectly fine for eveything, but then once i shut down my computer....it gives me an error and says it's performed an illegal operation. Maybe someone else has had this happen and knows how to fix it...or maybe someone just knows how to fix it. But please help!

Probably one of your 3rd party plugins to blame?
Do you use any General Purpose plugins?
Got any extra input plugins? (video maybe)
Are any vis or DSP/FX plugins active at the time?

Do you get any error messages if you close Winamp b4 shutting down?

Also, please provide full details of the error message, eg.
Winamp caused an invalid page fault in module kernel32.dll

Full sys specs wouldn't go amiss either.

nope, none of that stuff

no..no plugins of any sort, none. I don't have any extra video inputs either. I have no DSP/VX visuals on or even installe either. This is just the pur downloaded Winamp. But i'm not sure if it's 2.73 problem. Because I uninstalled it and installed 2.72 which didn't give me problems and now it gives me the error message also. It doesn't matter if winamp is closed or open...it still gives me the message.

It gave me this error:
Winamp caused an invalid page fault in module kernel32.dll

my system specs are as follows:
700mhz AMD Duron
3Dfx Voodoo 3 2000 AGP graphics card
Montego II sound card with A3D
128mb RAM
Windows 98se

uhh..is that good?
well thanks for the help!

Hmm . . . I've gotta say that it's usually a dodgy plugin that causes that error message.
But it's rare that it happens with the default setup, especially after a clean reinstall.

Does it make any difference if you use WaveOut or DirectSound output?

Have you tried changing any settings?
eg. in Prefs -> Display
Uncheck : Always show clutterbar | use Winamp styled cursors
In Prefs -> Options : make sure the process priority slider is set to "Normal"
Prefs -> Plugins : priority slider = Normal | uncheck "Auto execute vis on play"
Main window : try disabling built-in vis by toggling/(double)clicking.

It could be one little incompatible setting somewhere that's to blame.

Make sure you've got the latest drivers for soundcard & videocard.

What version of DirectX do you have? (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DXDIAG.EXE)
The default with Win98 is v6.1, though you should consider upgrading to v7.0a
Don't bother with v8 just yet, it's still in its buggy development stages.

Also, what other programs do you have running concurrently?
Any multimedia types that may be trying to access the soundcard?
Any firewall software or something like Norton Crashguard?

I'm clutching at straws a little, but it's the only way to troubleshoot . . .
. . . process by elimination method.

It's also possible that Windows itself is to blame, especially if you frequently install a lot of new programs. Maybe some essential Windows\System files have been replaced by incompatible versions?
