My suggestion for Winamp 5
Hi, in WINAMP 5 would it be possible to put in some sort of popup blocker? That way when i'm watching porn clips I download online, the stupid damn browser windows won't open up with ads for sites while the mpeg is playing. Know what I mean? I already have a popup program, but I guess it doesn't work on media files.

i think that is a very good idea. a lot of people watch porno, are they less important than those who don't? (which is a vast minority anyway heh)

I'm sorry, but that's got nothing to do with Winamp.
It's to do with the sites where you download the movies from, and your browser. The same thing will happen if you play those files in any other player, am I not wrong? Either that, or you've got some nasty spyware/malware installed on your system... |

If i'm not mistaken, for Mpg, avi and other video types, Winamp just uses the external codecs that are installed to windows. Therefore, the popups are the fault of the codecs that WMP uses, not Winamp.
And I doubt that Winamp can block those |

Yup, Winamp uses system-wide DirectShow Filters via in_dshow.dll to play all video formats . . . so in effect, it should be able to play anything WMP can play.
(exceptions being proprietry ms formats such as .asx playlists, though support for this can be added... but I'm not sure about the legality/licensing issues involved). I'm not sure if this issue is a codec/ds-filter/IE6 security exploitation, or if it's something else causing it, eg. executable code in the video file or tagging system itself, or if it's a spyware issue but I honestly don't think it's got much to do with Winamp Lord knows . . . |

i'm not trying to blame winamp for the popups please dont misconstrue that suggestion. but i think something to block that sort of thing on winamp would be an awesome feature. and of course, pornography isn't the only genre of media that can have popups embedded in it. they are just the first ones to think of it, i'm sure intrusive spammers will soon be tagging it into every mpeg they can find and passing it along through p2p services.

I doubt most popup blockers will block browser windows opened by WMP or whatever programs that uses directshow filters.
It's more a matter of getting codecs that don't support opening URL on start or stop of the said media. hmm, I found this which stops the popups(scripts) for WMP, which may stop the popups for winamp too. Now if I just had a file to test this on... |

i have tried several popup blockers, they dont block popups embedded in media.
"he can. lets end this " so no i can't Ikarus, but you can stop trolling after every one of my replies. if you dont like this thread, then move along. bitching about it only contributes. |

well if this would have been a serious thread, i would have said : yes, you're right.
But the thread began with "i use winamp for my jerkoff videos cant it help me more ?" i found it that ridiculous that i couldnt react differently. So why dont you get mozilla where popups doesnt even exist, and some codecs which don't make these problems ? i dont "bitch" i just say : we're trying to make winamp a better program for all here ..... and this thread is surely not important for this goal. |

oh ok so
i dont "bitch" i just say : we're trying to make winamp a better program for all here ..... and this thread is surely not important for this goal. in other words, those who look at porn are not considered "people" to you, and therefore could care less about. glad you're not developing software, you'd alienate 99.99% of people on the internet. let's be honest here. |

uh, microsoft are removing the ability to embed URL's in avi files shortly if i remember correctly. its all part of their "yes, it was a dumb idea which is a big fat security issue, so we'll clean it up now and hope nobody is any wiser" campaign.
