Playback Volume Issues

First of all, no, it is not covered in the FAQ Common issues (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=161361#common)

.mp3 files are playing with a low volume. I have played the exact same file in Windows Media Player/Center and have had no issues (but I despise them).

Yes, I have checked my preferences, and checked/unchecked Volume with the Nullsoft WaveOut Output as some have suggested.

No, I am not running any third party plug-ins.

This began occurring roughly 3 days ago, in which time I did not install any new software or hardware. Nor did I change any settings in Winamp prior to tinkering with the output plugin settings trying to resolve the issue.

Yes, I have reinstalled Winamp, with no results.

No, this is not a joke.

Edit: Just checked/tinkered the default windows volume mixer. It did not yield any desired results.

It is highly recommended to use thee DirectSound plug-in instead of waveOut.
  1. Winamp > Ctrl+P (for preferences)
  2. Plug-ins > Output
  3. double click Nullsoft DirectSound Output
  4. Other tab
  5. make sure 'Enable volume control' is checkmarked, you may also want to check mark 'Smooth volume changes'
  6. in the 'Volume control' dropdown box select 'Linear'
  7. Apply button > OK button > close out of Prefs
Although not necessary, close & restart Winamp to ensure changes fully take effect.

.mp3 files are playing with a low volume

I had the same issue the last few days and accidentally stumbled on a possible solution. I am a Windows 7 user on a Samsung laptop, not sure if this is the same cause you are experiencing, but here goes...

I had Winamp playing and another DJ software application playing too at the same time.

I clicked the speakers icon in the system's tray (near the clock on the RHS of the taskbar), then clicked on the Mixer link. Lo and behold in addition to Device and Applications sound levels, I found two additional sound levels: one for Winamp and one for the other DJ software. The latter was full volume and it sounded like it. The Winamp one was right down near minimum. Adjusting the volume for Winamp to maximum did the trick. I then found that Winamp's own volume slider control was usable to tweak the volume between different tracks as usual.

When the applications are not running they are not visible in the Windows 7 Mixer settings. It is therefore possible to be unaware of the fact until you next start up Winamp that the setting is still low.

I expect you may have a differient interface solution if you have a different on board graphics card, but I hope this helps you to diagnose further.

Good luck!
