Another update of this post. It's now just over 7KB (I have to use an external text editor and paste to the UBB textbox -heh).

Added:
 • PP's plugins!, Now with better links
 • Some encoders etc.
 • Wav/CD/MP3>WMA Section

MP3 to CD
Real easy:
 • Get Nero 5
 • Olivier Suggested using Goldenhawk CDRWIN to write one big MP3 or WAV as multiple tracks.
 • Or convert to WAV (see below) and use any program to burn as CD-Audio
Note:
 • DONT USE CDRW media: They dont work on 99.9% of stereos

MP3 to WAV
This is very easy to do with winamp so no program list this time
 • Make sure that shuffle and random are off
 • Go to preferences (press CTRL+P or use the context menu options>preferences, thanks to dianelala for telling me to include this)
 • Select Nullsoft diskwriter as your output plugin (prefs>plugins>output)
 • Press configure to select the directory the WAVs will go (forgot to mention this one, thanks go to Lumberjack and Reverend Ike for bringing it up )
 • Load the mp3s you want to convert to wav
 • Press play and wait
 • Remember to set output back to waveOUT or DirectSound
CDex does this too, along with Nero 5
Notes:
 • The above works for other conversions like VQF to WAV, with the notable exception of analog CD (not 100% sure) and secure formats (read:WMA)
 • You can also use one of PP's plugins, the ACM output plugin instead of nullsoft's.

CD to WAV
What you need is called a ripper.
Try:
CD to MP3
use:CD OR WAV or MP3 to WMA
I'm probably missing a few progs, but here goes
WAV to MP3
Lots of programs, many same as above

MP3 to MP3
No, youre not seing double. You might need this to save on disk space, copy file to a floppy or upload music to your portable player. The thing to note here is that even if you increase the bitrate the quality wont rise. So compressing with MP3 (or any other lossy format btw) goes only one way .
 • The free version of MusicMatch, suggestion by Bruce
 • Winamp, with a MP3 output plugin of your choice. (See notes at the end)

note: i dont know about other progs, suggestions are welcome.

MIDI to WAV
use this plugin, which has moved here

MP3/WAV to WMA
use the WMAoutput plugin (included in 2.63 and above)
or Nero 5

WMA to anything
M$ wont like it, so as to avoid legal issues, dont do it, and dont ask me how. All i can tell you is that its NOT possible with the current version.

MP3 Output Plugins
Notes:
 • Although Nero is CD-burning software, it can rip encode and decode most stuff (MP3,WAV,VQF,WMA), so it is included it these categories.
 • Nero, Audiograbber and Audiocatalyst are not Free software, i think all others are Free or Cardware or something like that.
 • Easy CD Creator is not included because it is not available for downloading, and has compatibility issues.
 • The free version of MusicMatch burns very slowly and was not included, but after Bruce`s comment, i put it on the MP3>MP3 section.
 • WinOnCD 3.7 is not available for downloading and therefore not included
 • Feel free to post Follow-Ups to this post to comment, add more info or correct me.
 • Please, whenever somebody posts about something covered here, link to this thread and don't post a new answer. The reason for this is to make this thread have all new info about conversions.

Thanks, and i hope this has helped you .

Just posting a nothing reply to make this thread return to the top of page 1.
It's so important and relevant that we can't have it slipping towards the middle of page 2 . . . ooh no !
There's still people posting new threads asking these same old questions over and over again . . . and to be perfectly honest, it's driving me quite mad ! -

Nice one Gandalf !

ps. Beware the Nazgal, Shelob, Golem & Balrog too !

gandalf -

Since the weekend is upon us, replete with newbies asking their mp3/wav questions, I thought it time to move your Masterpiece to its rightful position on page 1. Hope that's OK.

(Besides, DJEgg was probably going to do it anyway).

Could the webmaster somehow keep this post eternally at the top of the page? It is just absolutely fantastic, and completely thorough. I'm gonig to start asking folks to read this rather than the FAQ's

About MP3 encoding - try this plugin.

[edit]
#@! geocities.com doesn't allow external access to my files. Link above might not work.
I have 2 plugins related to mp3->wav and wav->mp3 stuff:
- LAME MP3 encoder output plugin (linked above)
- ACM WAV writer - allows you to convert files to different WAV formats; probably free of known bugs from Nullsoft disk writer.
U can find them at: http://www.geocities.com/pp_666/misc.htm

This is just a post to keep it at the top of the list. I do have a question though. I have 2.64 and didn't see a line-in plugin in the plugins directory. I downloaded one and it works fine, but didn't older versions of Winamp come with one? Or am I just going insane?

Winamp still does come with the plug-in. Nullsoft's CD plug-in and line-in plug-in are one and the same (in_cdda.dll).

hi everyone, i read what you wrote but still that is not helping me out.. i am having a problems with this winamp plugin. it is confusing.
I am trying to Convert RM,RA which is Real Audio files to Wave that i can burn it to a CD. but after i change it to Wav, i start to burn it.. My adaptec software tells me that is not a cd quality format, then i am not able to burn the wav files i did.. How would that be possible? How can I change the Real Audio files to Wave files that is convertible to Cd quality, if you get what i mean.
? Also how can I set the Nullsft WMA plugin to convert the RA because i get a message saying "Error setting output format on writer"?
To make it simple. if you can tell me what is the best way that i can do to convert Real Audio files using winamp to Wave files that is convertible to cd quality? thank you

Try ACM plugin - you can download it from here.

It worked!
At first, I had the impression that a large fraction of visitors to these boards were too lazy or illiterate or something to read the FAQ or to check to see if their questions had already been answered. But it occured to me that maybe there are thousands of people who come here, find the answers they need, and leave without posting. I wonder what the numbers really are.

hey guys,

Well, I have a little problem with ripping a song and putting it on napster. Im using Zlurp. 1st off, it usually says "EXT ended Info not found!" But it still lets me rip the titles.

Well the problem is that even though I have the encoded mp3's go directly to the napster music file, napster doesn't put them in my library. I can see them in the napster music file, but I cant see them in the library. I some how did it right with one of my new CD's.

Whats the deal?

Please help!!! Im completly stumped!!!

Thanks

Is it possible to convert WMA files to mp3 by burning them onto a cd and using nero to then make it an mp3?

Is there any way to go straight from CD to WMA in Winamp? Why can't you just use the WMA output while playing CDs, just like if you play an MP3 to convert it? That is the only thing that isn't covered in the FAQ above. This is definately a great thread and if someone can answer this question, the will be an all-encompassing thread.
Thanks a ton

IAtacheI,
The link was probably pointed to PP's DirectMusic plug-in, which has since been temporarily removed from Winamp.com's plug-in section. To get it, go to PP's website at www.geocities.com/pp_666.

Well, as you can see this post was updated. I want to ask you people a few things though:
 • Should i add more rippers/encoders/burners etc?
 • Should i add stuff for other formats (VQF etc)?
 • Should i post more step-by-step stuff ?
 • Should i get some free webspace to host all that ?
Thanks

There is a little problem: the DM plugin URL should be: http://www.geocities.com/pp_666/midi.htm
The rest of my plugins can be downloaded from here: http://www.geocities.com/pp_666/misc.htm

I can only post anouncements on forums i moderate, so the most i can do is put it up on the Ask steve forum (It wouldn't do for Justin's or bug reports). I'll try and get somebody to post in other forums.

Hi Gandalf !

Nice one for the Read This First announcement.

BTW, You need to edit the HTML links 'cos they both seem to lead to my FAQ Thread.
Well actually, the last word of the 2nd sentence ["this"] links to your Encoding thread. Far out, eh !

Hey, there's a few rather interesting new threads today. I'm intrigued with the "Extension.Lnk" one . . . tho' haven't got a clue what the guy with the "Invalid password" problem's going on about ?

I wish someone could help out Woolverine with his "Winamp opening EXE attachments in E-mail" problem.

And as for this one : sheesh ! http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=30816

Over and out !

Hey Lord Gandalf,
I've just realised that you've not included any info on recording from the line-in to WAV or MP3 etc.
There's still a fair few people asking about this !
It might also be wise to include a download link to the Line-in plug-in [in_line.dll] as I find this is much better and easier to use than the default input plug-in.
