Winamp Access Violation in nxlite.dll - will not open or load
Hello and happy new year. Winamp has been working flawlessly but suddenly today it won't open. I've been through the stickies and didn't find anything on this particular issue. It will also not open in safe mode. Here is info from crash log:
Winamp client version: 5.666 Build 3516 winamp caused an Access Violation (0xc0000005) in module nxlite.dll at 0023:0723100e. Exception handler called in Winamp. Error occurred at 1/2/2022 13:12:08. I think I last downlaoded all the recommended patches in either 2016 or 2020. I am NOT very tech savvy, so if anyone can help, please provide instructions that a dummy like me can follow. THANK YOU! |

PS Was working fine yesterday and last night. I have not downloaded any new programs or done any updates of any kind since that time. Just got up today and it won't open. I see the skin on screen for a couple seconds then it analyzes and crashes. Thanks

I'll probably not be able to help you; let's say that up front. But if this happened to me, one of the 1st things I'd do is check the Event Viewer, to see if something happened just before the first occurrence; or during each occurrence, something that we recognize or can work with... It can't hurt, if you've got the time.
Start menu, search, eventvwr.exe. Windows logs, System and/or Application. Probably an app hang? With loads of alphanumericals that are gibberish (to me)? I think 'administrative events'(?) filters on all errors and warnings, you could try that. (You may see a ton of those, and it could well be that none of them is actually a problem for you! Don't immediately panic. However, file system and disk trouble might be interesting... as might many others.) Well... give it a shot if you like. Sorry! Can anybody else help more? Edit: the trouble seems to be with a DLL. If you can find that file and it accidentally happens to be in the plugins folder, you might try to temporarily rename its extension (add ".culprit" or something, behind the .DLL -- be sure you do see the .dll part before you do that)... See if you can at least salvage some of your content -- if any. And/or get the file from elsewhere, (reinstall on another machine?) and replace it -- but I give that quite a slim chance. Sorry again, let's see what the experts say. |

Thanks! Fortunately all my music files are fine, so no content is lost. It's definitely that one nxlite.dll file that is causing the problem. Not sure why or what do about it.

Don't know if this helps, but I just noticed that my FLAC files (in their original locations) are no longer associated with Winamp and when I go to my Windows control panel settings, I know longer am able to see or choose Winamp as a file association type.

Thanks NJK.
I read through the article but it states that "The first version of nxlite.dll for Winamp 5.8 beta build 3660 was seen on 10/18/2018. According to our records, this is the primary and most recent file release from Nullsoft." I am using 5.666 Build 3516. That page offers a download link to replace nxlite.dll but says it's for 5.8. Should I download and try to replace that file? |

Thanks. I replaced nxlite.dll with a new file from the link you provided. Now the Winamp window opens but is blank, except for a new error message saying " There was an error loading nde.dll. This could be due to a failed update or removed by mistake".
I checked and nde.dll is still in the winamp folder. |

nde.dll is the Nullsoft Database Engine, primarily used by Winamp's Media Library feature.

No, replacing the first dll with a different version was the start of this new chain of errors.
I would advise, if you can, to use Koopa's backup tool [first] for Winamp and then reinstall Winamp 5.666, without doing a clean install. Hopefully it will undo any background Windows update that might have caused a faulty rebasement of Winamp's support dlls. This method will hopefully allow you to keep your playlists and Media Library data. [EDIT /] http://koopa.meggamusic.co.uk/backuptool/ |
