Winamp on older CPUs (AMD Athlon)

Up to Winamp 5.601 the program ran smoothly on my old XP boxes with AMD Athlon processors.
Since Version 5.61, including the current 5.62, Winamp crashes with error code 0x0000001d = "Illegal Instruction", as soon as the media library tries to show up.
It seems that some part of the media library now uses SSE or something like that, which isn't available on Athlon CPUs.
Is there a chance, that future Winamps could branch their code depending on the CPU specs, just like they seemed to do before?
