well that's the last you guys will see of me posting new images for the moment. As I'll now be taking the time and all my energy on rendering the Iris in 3d and then animating it and then applying the texture to the 3d model.
(like hell i'm animating it by hand in photoshop. just no bloody way.. I'm obsessive compulsive, not masachistic) |

Okay, Yes there are errors, I'll go back and fix those, this was really a Proof of concept more then anything. (done in PS, got bord and miffed off at the 3d proggies)
yes it's in low color and small to meet Board upload requirements. |

Well as it stands I'm doing the PS version because It could take me months to learn enough 3D skills to render it cleanly. This really is just to be used in the event that I just can't get it to happen in 3D. After all my 3d Skills SUCK. I clearly admit it. I am a total 3D noob. So untill I can say i'm comforatble modeling the Iris in 3D So it dosn't look like crap vs the rest of the skin, I did the PS'ed version to give us Something.
Well.. this one is clean and should be able to stand untill the day I feel cofident to submit a 3D verison., yes it's rezed down to fit Board file limits (got I wish they'd up that) |

It actually doesn't look bad at all, however, a 3D version would still be preferred.. ![]() One thing tho, the highlight painting "slip" is still there.. ![]() -Plague |

hehe, yea... I'm a bit pedantic that way...
![]() Anyways, we've worked out the confusion on what I mean now (it's not a highlight).. And the fullsize version doesn't look nearly as bad as this downsized one.. -Plague |

Hey
I just thought I would give you guys a heads up. I am one of the primary graphic artist's for the Stargate SG-1 series, and I think you guys need a bit of info. First off, I think your project is great, and if it weren't for my "non-disclosure" contract, I would love to help you on this project, but I can't... Second, I would like this project to continue and succeed, as it sound like a fun deal, which is why I am giving you this info.
1) You are treading dangerously close to copyright infringment, you are getting to close to the stargate graphics, and this poses a problem, however one which can easily be fixed. I would recommend you simply change some of the buttons on the DHD to actual stereo symbols (play, pause, stop, etc...). Two reasons, it changes the overall appearance so you aren't directly copying the copyrighted images. Second, it will make your skin much easier to use. I also recommend that you put a bit more "artistic liberty" into the graphics, by tweaking them just a bit so they are unique, this will protect you a bit. 2) Since Stargate is an active series which is both in current production and will be for ... a while (can't say how long, sorry!), the studio will take the infringment thing very seriously. Since you do not have a completed project yet, it doesn't matter yet, which is why I wanted to warn you now. If you publish this project without changing some stuff, they will force it's removal, and that would defeat the whole purpose of doing it! So basically, I recommend you make some changes to your design and take some artistic liberties, and you will avoid any bad things from happening. I really think this would be a cool skin, so good luck! I know we all like it to be accurate and perfect, but sometimes you just can't do it that way... If anybody has questions as to this possible issue, you are welcome to message me or just post it here and I will see it, just don't ask for details about the series... I really can't talk too much about it. |

Damn..! Well at least we know the skin was as realistic as possible, which is a good thing I guess.
Thanks for the info Silver Falcon... If you happen to know of any actors/extras needed for SG-1, I'm more than happy to accomodate ![]() |

You can still continue with the "authentic" version though, just don't distribute it and don't put it in the Winamp database. Keep it as something for yourself to say: "See, this is what I can do."
Good work though, I'll be following your progress. ![]() ![]() |

Well.. I am currently Contacting The Folks at Stargate-sg1.com and Proposing a comprimise. Basically that they let us finish this skin as we want too, and that they put it up for all the visitors of the site may download and use.
Personaly I think that's the best solution for all. They Get something else to Promote the franchise without having to spend a dime. (Most companies wouldn't even Balk at this kind of opertunity to get something for nothing). But we shall see. |

Agreed. I'm sure if a nicely worded email would allow us to continue this great skin. It can't hurt to have some extra publicity for themselves. Just be sure to include the fact that it will not be used for profit or anything. Maybe, just maybe, they could offer some extra info to help us get the skin just that little bit better.

Just a little word of caution, don't get your hopes up too high, they can and, if past experience is right, will probably say no.
On the other hand, "no" you have already, "yes" is still in the realm of possibilities. ![]() |

Oh sure, MGM might say no. Course i sent the email to technically Birdcage and RDA (who tends to be very behind the fan base). MGM as far as stargate has been fairly supportive of Fan NFP Fan projects to date. Hell they organise GateCon earily to promote the franchise and keep it a hot ticket.
Of course I emphisized that this was a NFP project and also stated that they are totally welcome to be the sole distributor of the skin (via the Sg1 site). yeah i know thier's a 50/50 shot in the dark, but really.. if you were them Rose. Would you turn down a publicity project for one of your hottest items that didn't cost you a cent? |

Small Tidbit following...
The advertising folks generally allow things like this, so long as they know about them, and you don't try in any way to make money off them (which I'm assuming your not...) You shouldn't have many problems, expecially if you give them the chance to distribute it to people from their site. And if not, you were correct, so long as you don't "publicly" distribute it, there would never be a problem. You may want to think twice about contacting the legal people... they tend to tie things up for a while, think about your ulimate goal carefully before you do that. Good Luck! |

heh.. It's actually quite amusing that we're getting TOO close to the original. That alone is a testimony to your talent Foxw!
![]() I really hope we wont end up having to change the graphics as it would somewhat change the whole purpose of this project. I'm gonna cross my fingers and hope the email Foxw sent gets a positive response. Silver Falcon: as other have said already, thanks for the heads up! It's nice to get the notice as positive feedback, instead of in the form of an angry letter after the whole project is finished and released. (it's happened to other projects unfortunately) -Plague |

Okay, Update on things.
1. Main Graphics are done. I'm leaving them as they are (and maintaining the original psds) untill i hear from the ad folks at MGM/SG-1, at which point i will either make the alterations as need be or burn the psd's to cd. 2. On the code front, just waiting for Plague to finish his current project so we can start coding this one. That's bout all that needs to be said. I think ![]() |
