READ ME: If you blindly clicked next while installing Winamp
First off, if Winamp installed something you didn't want, it was your own fault. When you install Winamp it gives you the choice to install only what you want.
So here's a guide to installing Winamp that even a dumbass can understand. ![]() This is self expanitory. It gives you a quick overview of what you can install with Winamp. ![]() The license agreement. If you don't agree to any of this, just click cancel and find yourself another player. ![]() This is where you decide where you want Winamp to go on your computer. If you want it somewhere else, say so. ![]() Now this is the tricky part, so I've outlined most of the things for you so you don't have to go clicking on stuff. Winamp (required) Winamp agent (Winamp system tray tool) Multimedia Engine -Audio playback (Contains various audio codecs to install) -Video playback (Contains various video codecs to install) -Audio encoders (Audio encoders required for CD ripping) -Output (Audio processors) -CDDB -Sonic Ripping/Burning Support -Signal processor studio plugin (add effects to songs) Winamp Library (If you don't want the ML, uncheck it, it's right THERE) -Winamp Media Library -Core ML Components (Playlists, Now Playing, etc) -Transcoding Tool (Convert one file to another) -Replay Gain (Make all your files have the same volume) -Winamp Dashboard (Homepage portal for the ML) -Auto tagger (tag your files for you) -Podcast Directory (subscribe\download pod casts) -Remote Media (Access your ML from other PCs etc) -Online Media (Access online media) -Playlist Generator (Generate acoustically dynamic playlists) -Portable Media Player support (Support for Ipods and the like) User Interface Extensions -Global Hotkey Support -Extended Jump to File support -Nullsoft Tray Control -Modern Skin support Visualization -Nullsoft Tiny Fullscreen -Advanced Visualization Studio -Milkdrop2 (pure sex) -Line in support Okay, you see how all that stuff has little boxes next to it? That means you can uncheck anything you don't want installed. Whether it be the ML, Vis plugins, modern skins, etc. So don't write a post bitching about how you got the ML and you didn't want it. So once you get everything that you want checked, you can click next and move on to the next step. ![]() Do you want a desktop shortcut, or a start menu shortcut? No then uncheck the fucking boxes nimrod. ![]() See all those check boxes there? If you don't want that stuff, uncheck it. If you get an E-Music icon on you desktop, it's YOUR fault. ![]() That's it, you're done. Well almost. ![]() This is what you get the first time you launch Winamp. Don't fret. Just pick the skin you want, click next and select the files you want associated with winamp. Then give a little information (or not it's your choice). Now. With all that said. If you have ANYTHING other than Winamp installed that you didn't want. You had the chance to not install it. Have a nice day. |

ryan...
I had to revive this Sticky thread. It appears that ImageShack free hosting is not reliable enough to keep images intact. See this screenshot to clarify what I'm referring to... ![]() Now, here's my question... Would you like me to host the images at my server for you? This is a great Sticky thread / Guide and it's referenced many times in the forums. But to have these images go missing... well, you get my point. ![]() ![]() So, would you like me to host the images? If so, then the thread can be edited to point to images at the new location (Chev or another mod can edit it). Let me know! ![]() Don't email or PM me concerning Winamp. Instead, either start a NEW TOPIC or post a REPLY in the appropriate thread in these forums. This will also benefit others who may have a similar question or problem. But before posting, please first Search the forums and read all FAQs and all Sticky threads. Big bump...
Great job Ryan. I had someone ask me how to "fix things" if they already installed all the stuff they later found out they didn't want. Should I post some kind of tutorial for changing things back to what they're more familiar with? Don't forget to live before you die. ![]() |

Being uninformed doesn't necessarily make someone a dumbass. Sometimes people don't really understand what they are installing or getting into until after they have had some time to see the end product. This is especially true if something looks good in it's description but turns out to be shit.
Uninstalling and reinstalling with a more careful and informed point of view can be very helpful, and I'm glad you suggested it, but might not cover the emusic piece, since simply uninstalling Winamp does not unsubscribe said person from emusic. Don't forget to live before you die. ![]() |

Since everyone is so high on using the latest version, can someone answer me these:
Using the new version> Will I be able to use my v2.91 skins? Can I still use the Chun-Yu Shei MP3 Output Plug-in? Can I still use the in_CDReader.dll plug-in? |

Yes.
I am unaware of any changes that would prevent the use of older plug-ins, so I would guess this is a yes too. See above answer. =============================== related food for thought: Really, my philosophy of updating to newer versions of software is this: 1.) Think about what you want the software to do for your specific needs. 2.) If your old version still does this with a good degree of stability, then keep it without updating. 3.) If you have carefully reviewed the changes made on the newer version, and you believe that the newer version will better suit your needs, then it would be the better choice to update. Just my 2 cents worth of advice, take it or leave it. Don't forget to live before you die. ![]() |

Actually old plugins may not actually work correctly/at all, there has been a number of changes since the v2 days.
If they don't then you'll need to check for newer versions, or find alternative versions. (or use the shipped plugins/built in features) |

Thanks swingdjted. I 2nd your thought of "If your old version still does this w/a good degree of stability, then keep it w/o updating".
The only problem I'm having, which I can probably live with, is that I can't get Winamp to STOP taking over the file types of media files! I go to Preferences>Setup>File Types & select only a few I want associated w/Winamp & close out Winamp. But whenever Winamp is opened, Preferences>Setup>File Types has EVERYTHING selected. I've even unchecked 'Register types on Winamp start' & under Preferences>Setup>Agent, no box is checked. Also made sure Winamp Agent is NOT starting when my comfuser starts. Baffled! |

Usually once you uncheck file types you don't want associated, they stay associated with winamp until you associate those types using another program (e.g. VLC player for video in my case). Does winamp re-associate after making the change with another program?

Winamp is really a pretty mild example of software that will install a bunch of crap you didn't want. It always seemed to be to be highly ethical to give you the options it does. Also, I've never run into anything you accidentally installed that wasn't reversible. What it installs as far as toolbars and other crap you might not like is removable from the control panel cleanly.
You can tell these developers are trying to make a living. You can also tell they are not trying to screw your computer up. It seems, so far, that it's important to them. You can tell from all the security patches. Kudos Gentlemen. |

I like winamp better than the other windows players... however there are better ways to make a living than hoping people won't pay attention.

Changing default address bar search engines is pretty technical for the average user though. Reverting back to Google's "I'm feeling lucky" is tricky for non-geeks. I wish that was something that they would have left out.

The pictures all show correctly for me; perhaps you meant that the windows look different now and therefore we need different pictures?
For the most part I'm guessing the process is very similar, which means if you read the first post, you'll still have a pretty good idea what to do, even if some changes have been made since. Post back here if you still have questions. Don't forget to live before you die. ![]() |

If I would have to reinstall Windows some day, then I would let unchecked "emusic" during the install process (but I would take all the other elements of Winamp again, step-by-step), because "emusic" really seems to be a troublemaker...
![]() I have all my friends in all the platforms (many of them are very good other artists), and I can go to SoundCloud, Jamendo, Internet Archive etc., far away enough from all this "Top Ten Pop". I really don't need the "50 FREE MP3s + 1 Free Audiobook!", because I won't use "emusic". I prefer much better music... ![]() ![]() ![]() Greetings from Sabine Klare Aka Sternenmaschinebine |
