winamp not playing some mp3 files

Hi all.

After installing service pack 2 for windows vista home premium 32bit, I'm finding that winamp won't play many of my mp3 files. I've copied a file to the icon and it plays just fine on that device but not in winamp which I've selected to be my default player for all file types of audio.

I'm running the latest version (5.61) at least I think that's the latest version and I've uninstalled the program, gone into the registry and deleted the keys, wiped out the folder, rebooted and installed the application a second time with the same results.

It'll play the little intro file the first time that winamp comes up but it doesn't play some radio station pls files either so I'm at a loss as to what to do to resolve this puzzling situation.
This doesn't seem to be the year for all things technical for me.

Thanks for any help possible.

as a follow up to my first post,
I tried different files and the sample rate and bitrate didn't seem to
matter at all. some files will play and some won't. Files that won't play
by pressing enter on them also don't play when trying to open them from
within the application.

I tried running it in compatibility mode for windows xp sp2 as well as
windows 2000 and running it as administrator and those things didn't do
anything either.

This is after reinstalling it for a third time and being sure options like
the transcode tool were checked and ensure that all file types were selected
for sure. i'm at a complete loss now. If anyone has any other ideas, I'd
be open to them because I have a show that I need to do tomorrow.

Someone suggested that I try running an older version of the program but I
don't have an install package for such a thing and it would probably bug me
until I updated. Having said that, if it works with an older version, I
could run the installer for the new one and just select previous install
instead of custom and see what happens. Thanks for the further help.

what version of winamp are you running?

do the files work in other apps, like WMP?

do you use RG?

when you say winamp won't play them, do you mean you can't hear them, or they just won't even load?

have you run the freeware utility mp3val on the files?
