Winamp noob. Crappy sound

I've done some searching here and on the web.... I recently downloaded Winamp on my laptop to play mp3s for dj show. I use the 3.5mm out into my mixer then though speakers. But the music sounds hollow like there is no sound definition. Ive played around with the equalizer even using some of preset's and little change . I know I'm missing something. It's like there is no amplification behind it. Appreciate the help!

First, try plugging in the headphones, does it still sound crappy? then its your mixer or speakers.
second, try playing the same files with wmp or some other app to determine if it's just the software.
if it still sounds crappy, then it could be a hardware issue or file issue, if this only happens with winamp then make sure replay gain is turned off and the eq is disabled. Or, try a clean install.

Definitely not mixer or speakers. Plugged into my phone sounds fine. Even just playing mp3s on my computer through winamp the sound seems off. Like flat no highs or low's.

OK when I play the mp3s though winamp they sound like crap. Played though windows media they are fine. I did enable the winamp equalizer and loaded one of its installed preset's and it didn't change much.

And replay gain is disabled? Do you have any DSP or any plugins that would effect the sound?
