Assuming that you have the latest version (2.91), go to preferences (CTRL-P) -> plugins -> output -> Directsound Output -> configure.

In the configuration window that appears, click on the "Fading" tab, and enable both the "Fade on start" and "fade on end of song" options. Increase the "default fade length" to the required length. Now you should get a smooth fadeout and fade-in for your music.

If you want truly gapless mode however, for example with a live CD, then a better option is gapless mode. To enable this, go to preferences (CTRL-P) -> plugins -> output -> Directsound Output -> configure, and in the configuration window that appears, click on the
"Buffering" tab. Increase "Buffer ahead on track change" value
(600ms recommended here), and under the "Other" tab, Checkmark "remove silence at beg/end of track".
