It has been quiet in here lately, thanks for stopping by hakanh (Sabine Klare, where art thou? I miss you ).

Star Nova turned out to be the next evolution of Star Nova, so I'm quite happy that you're liking the new Star Nova more than Star Forge . Could you describe visually what you're looking for in martain's v14a? I checked the per-frame code but there isn't anything new there compared to Star Nova. I'm always open to new ideas from you hakanh (and anyone else ).

Some relatively significant polishing of the visuals (warp shader code). Enjoy !

The beat response (in the circle) of the star effect of Martin's v14a mod version to the music rhythm seems much more reactive.

I have done a little review to see differences and the detailing process can be done on a black background much better than your original preset, so I changed composite shader part. Already in Martin's mode, the background has a blackish tone and it looks really cool.

In fact, now it became a tester version. I hope you can see easily the difference.

v6a seems to produce better screenshots and looks cool in motion too. Also reverted to the previous beat detection scheme.

Ok here goes hakanh .

The v6 SN series features some real heavy hitters in the visual department. Tough for me to beat, but finally it seems my imagination is taking form in reality. The paint drop / fringed edges effect is perfect for this preset. V6b features some visual gymnastics that I haven't seen in the previous two versions, so hopefully its better overall. At the very least, it features a center circle that should be more active to the beat. I've lazily included some screenshots as well.

Edit: Oh, and I'm offering this version for winamp v5.8 .

It seems an intermediate version is looking better than v6b, and its only fair I post it since most of the last screenshots are from this intermediate version. Again, as usual, submitting this version for the possibility of winamp v5.8 .

I must be a bit hypomanic coming out with all these new ideas for improvement . I can only hope they are actual improvements and not a result of "tunnel vision." But I imagine the improvements will be drawing to a close with this latest version, at least insofar as the current schema allows for. Star Nova as it is now is well matured like fine wine. I'm quite surprised at how far the visuals have come since the earlier versions.

The latest version features an again tweaked center circle, per-vertex code, and warp shader code. The results should be, if my eyes indeed see them, an even more "painted" effect with incrementally improved motion and prettier patterns more often, both in the periphery and in the center circle. The colors and brightness are a bit more stable now too. I've gone and posted a bunch of screenshots, so I'll pass this time. I can at least say though that the improved visuals are making what would normally be ordinary quite good, and what is extraordinary (1 in 10 or 100 screenshots) even better.

I had a friend come by and look at the preset. Well, some actually over time. One of them said it changes too fast, which it does indeed do on a lot of music. So, I'll ask the community: Should the beat detection for the whole-screen changes be slower? It might be a bit faster than v5.

Edit: Oh and it goes without saying that I hope winamp v5.8 comes out and I hope this latest version makes the winamp v5.8 cut .

Star Nova v7 is here

Greetings everyone, looks like I'm indeed a bit hypo-manic, because I already have another version of Star Nova ready for release, and its a pretty significant update. This time, though, for both the center circle and the periphery I focused on the beat detection and motion instead of the screenshots, so it will look better when viewing (for those who don't use Star Nova for screenshots, which is probably pretty much everyone lol). The center circle and the periphery more aggressively act on the beat of the music.

Well, it turns out that the screenshots also got better with the motion getting better. 1 in 10 screenshots became common (maybe about 1 in 2 or 1 in 3), and to be fair, 1 in 100 screenshots probably became about 1 in 20 or 1 in 15. Unfortunately, I was only able to narrow down the screenshots to 52 out of 247, so I'll pass on posting screenshots.

Still, the preset may be a bit fast for some on some music, which I should be able to fix without taking away too much from the visuals if anybody requests a slower preset. Anyways, I hope everyone enjoys the new preset, it may indeed be the best version yet by a good margin.

I know things are slow around here, but its been 5 days and nobody has given any feedback about the beat detection, so I'll assume that means the beat detection isn't too fast.

I've updated Star Nova's beat detection so that it goes with the music better. It really makes the preset musical in mysterious ways. I haven't really taken a lot of screenshots or analyzed them, but hopefully with the better beat detection it will make for better stills (after all, a preset in motion is simply a bunch of still frames back to back).

So, without further ado, here's Star Nova v7a . Again, I hope this latest version is considered in winamp v5.8, which I hope gets released some day. And, I hope everyone enjoys this latest version, perhaps for a long, long time. It may be a long time before I come out with a new version, unless somebody requests slower beat detection. I think this version embodies what I sought for in Star Forge / Star Nova very well, and I'm satisfied once again.

By now I'm sure everyone is used to the dynamic visuals of Star Nova, but still I'd like to post some screenshots as a marker of the progress of the preset compared to earlier screenshot groupings (well, hopefully. The competition from the other versions' screenshots is pretty steep). All of these screenshots are from v7a (shown as v7c4 in the screenshots). The main improvement here is better larger scale form but micro-detail may be improved as well.

I'm glad I managed to narrow down what I had to the ten most interesting. It wasn't easy, I excluded a lot of others that were different from all these and interesting in their own right.

I spent some time re-reading through the thread, and I've gained some insights. I feel that I owe the community an apology.

I can't believe how so unnecessarily have I become jaded over time about the relative lack of attention my preset versions seem to gain over time. I've been very proud of my preset for a while, but I've only just now discovered that my pride was becoming a problem for me here. I thought nobody cared about my preset any more, but perhaps I've been driving people away. In any case, its okay if the preset is losing its appeal; the pride isn't worth it.

I must apologize for my complaining and rambling in the topic. After rereading through the thread, I came to realize how little weight I was giving to those who have gone to and/or posted in my topic. I didn't even realize that I was doing this until now, and it is a blunder. Really, everyone here has been the best. I can't believe how kind this community has been and how patient everyone has been through the development of Star Forge and Star Nova. Thank you very much .

I don't know if an apology really is due, but please accept it of it is . I'm sorry for being an ass to everyone .

No need for any apology, Fumbling_Foo, you should be proud of your preset. Thanks for sharing with us.

Speaking of members here, haven't seen Sabine Klare in awhile. I hope she's ok.

Awesome remixes, xmuzack . I really, really liked v2a. Looks great and even better has some potentially very useful code. I might even be able to play with the code and integrate it into Star Nova, especially the warp shader code. I'd really like to since it looks better and seems to be newer and more features than what I got out of the original Flexi's "Infused With the Spiral". Thanks !

Ok, so I did some more work on Star Nova until I started getting burnt out again. I was going to wait until I integrated the code xmuzack brought to the table, but since I'm getting burnt out again I figured I'd go ahead and share the hopeful gains already for Star Nova.

I haven't done much in the way of screenshots, but it seems to look better in motion now. Namely and most significantly I've updated the beat detection for the center circle. Its now a lot more fun to watch and actually seems to go with the beat in some melodic fashion. I've also tweaked the beat detection of the whole screen per-vertex changes. Finally, I did a simple tweak in the warp shader that seems to provide more detail in the "clouds" and improves their progression.

Cheers and enjoy !

This latest version of Star Nova is entertaining me once again. I fixed a typo and made a minor change in the warp shader, and the image on the screen seems a bit sharper and more well-defined, and the colors are a bit better too. However, this version sees yet another significant change in the central waveform, more so than in the history of Star Nova and Star Forge. Now, the size of the waveform is animated to the beat of the music, and it looks much, much better. This was something I wanted to do for quite some time but didn't because I wasn't sure of the code and I thought "if it ain't broke don't fix it." Finally, the center waveform seems to be keeping up with the periphery in dynamics. And thankfully, at least as far as my eyes can see at the moment and as far as I can think the code logically operates, the updated waveform goes to the beat of the music very well and is even more melodic than the previous version.

Actually, its time for a name change. This version I dub "Symphony Nova". Really, its the most fitting name I could think of for whatever it is that I'm looking at. A nova is a star that is ejecting gas on a temporary basis, and there is a pretty good semblance to the layers within a star and the motion and mixing of the gas, in addition to the presence of a nebula-like form in the periphery (the Hubble Space telescope has captured some pretty stunning images of nebulae - so too have I for this preset ). Actually, maybe a "jawbreaker" would be even more fitting, but that sounds less lively and energetic than what I see on the screen. I digress. The "symphony" part comes in with the *hopefully* melodic arrangement and fitting form of the elements on the screen to the beat of the music. I've worked just as hard on the beat detection as I have the visuals. One cannot go without the other, otherwise the preset is no longer dynamic in appearance and we are left with a preset like most others (that are also pretty to look at, possibly more so than Symphony Nova, but relatively static and fixed in the appearance and arrangement of elements), instead of being a preset unlike any other. Unique and *hopefully* worth the look. So, cheers and *hopefully* enjoy .

And it goes without saying I hope this version is considered in winamp 5.8 .

Edit: I just realized that Symphony Nova is waaay too fast for a good bit of symphonic or orchestral music, as the name would imply it being for :/. Works good for most modern music though. Something that I'll hopefully be able to address in a later version.

I really don't think there are enough elements in play in Symphony Nova to call it a symphony, but I still like the name "Nova," so i'll call this version "Harmony Nova". The difference in this version is simplified code but a better sense of resonant beat detection. The previous version's center waveform was entertaining to watch, but it had a real problem of being frenetic and chaotic with slower / non-beat music like many film scores and classical music. This version fixes that while still being able to parse the smaller, quicker variations in musical notes of faster music like guitar solos in rock. In addition, the waveform seems to harmoniously resonate with the beat of the music and the most prominent instruments (and voice) of the music.

Cheers and enjoy !

Edit: Oh and it goes without saying I hope this latest version is considered in winamp 5.8 .

The Harmony Nova is nice. I'm going to take a page from you and learn the ins and out of a preset. I admire your patience.

Btw, are you a fan of Royal Caribbean? On my bucket list to go on a cruise ship one day.

Edit: Harmony Nova goes well with the "line in" method in Milkdrop when not listening to music that I just recently discover here in this forum. http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=315225

Looks really great on a second monitor as moving art on a wall. My favorite being Martin's Zen Walk.

Milkdrop is a gift that keeps on giving.

Thanks xmuzack, highest of compliments from you and greatest of gratitude from me . If I don't bungle it, perhaps soon I'll release v2 with a relatively significant upgrade to the visuals .

It took me a while combing through martin's thread, and I a finally found the elusive "Zen Walk". Wow, is that preset a treat . I was blown away by martin's madelbox preset but this one is even more impressive.

Having a starting point of being a total newbie to milkdrop and knowing at best basic algebra, every bit of code seemed to work magically or supernaturally. Working through it in this long, long time, I've finally been getting a basic idea of how some code works (logical, not magical), and with the familiarity I have with the preset I can look at the screen and say "this line of code is causing that on the screen." Especially helpful is using the "monitor" feature (press "n" on the keyboard to show the per-frame "monitor = variable" value). Also, sometimes I'll use martin's "harmonic beat detection" to graph something I've pasted there.

When I want to change something, I'll know where to go but not necessarily what to do, but I'll know enough to fumble around with the right variables and in-the-ballpark functions to make the change I want. I've developed some better basic math and programming skills by looking up sin(), cos(), tan(), etc. and reading up on functions in the milkdrop tutorial (and running into / fixing compiler errors in milkdrop), but the skill I've probably developed most is knowing what out of the innumerable number of possible changes would make this preset look better in some way according to its schema/template instead of simply different.

Imagination and vision for what a schema/template can be and can do is very important for development, but the starting point of course will be experimenting with bits of code or what's already out there. I and probably everybody (except Flexi and Martin ) has had the problem and frustration of translating imagination into reality with milkdrop. But still, knowing some possible potential for development for a given preset or idea, for us mere mortals its possible to make progress toward that by tinkering and fumbling with bits of code and variables in a mashup or preset project. The important point here is figuring out which line / section of code causes a given effect on the screen, keeping in mind any q variables it uses.

I'm too much of an introvert/hermit to go on a cruise, lol . I see my surroundings and think to myself "this is my reality in this world - a small and stable slice of reality on this big, big planet orbiting a giant ball of fire." Most of this mentality probably came from my autism. Routine, stability, familiarity are important in autism. Stability and familiarity became more important for me after contracting Schizoaffective disorder, as the fear, anxiety, and paranoia I experience makes venturing out of my comfort zone more difficult. Maybe that's evident in how I've stuck with a single schema / template in preset authoring, but Harmony Nova and the other later versions would never have happened otherwise. I like that you described it as moving art, that's exactly what I've been trying to do .

I think I rambled again in that last post xmuzack, lol .

Harmony Nova v2 is now gud nuff' ready for release. I'll try and save the versions here for significant updates, so if there's any more development they'll be included in a v3. This latest version features an again (and again, and again...) tweaked beat code for the whole-screen changes. Maybe I finally nailed it this time for coming in for the "right" beats and not necessarily being full-throttle for all of them. Also, I've fixed a glaring problem in the warp shader and, again, *hopefully* improved its appearance, by a good margin even. In probably all the earlier versions, the uv coordinates for the center rapidly super-imposed themselves on the whole screen, destroying the detail and producing blaring colors after just a few seconds of inactivity. Now, the code seems to contrast detail and color into the image instead. ZOMG!!! I went at the screen. Problem fixed and just did what I had always wanted to do for this preset but had no idea how. Two birds one stone!

So, enough rambling. In short both the smoothness and timeliness of the whole-screen transitions and the visuals should be improved in v2 (so, I hope this latest version is considered for winamp v5.8 ).

Cheers and enjoy !
