Picture of the day [July 12]

As a worker at a grocery store in Munich, Germany sorted some tropical fruits, a poisonous spider crawled towards her: This Banana spider, originally coming from South America, found her way to Europe over the Atlantic in a banana box. Finally, the fire squad came to catch the animal and took it to the Zoologic Institute in Munich. A bite of this banana spide can lead to nausea, local pain where the bite occured, even to heart flutter and death because of break down of the respiratory system through paralysed lungs.

The same happened to me once, I was unloading a container of indonesian bathroom-ware (we used to label it 'made in england' and sell it on for 10 times the cost). Anyway, there was a tropical spider as large as my fist on one of the pallets. Added some excitement to an otherwise boring day.

Someone called the fire squad to come capture the thing?

I would have just squashed it.

Same! I think that it is quite uneccessary to bring in the fire squad to capture a spider.

I absolutely hate spiders (I can't breathe when they get too close to me...I know but I can't do anything against it) but even I would have gotten a paper and smashed it since nothing can be worse than leaving the room calling someone to get the spider, coming back and seeing that it vanished and hides someplace now...(especially when you have to sleep in the very same room)but staying next to it and waiting until the fire squad arrived would have been way more dangeous in my opinion...

Yeah, i'm sure the fire squad kinda felt like that was an abuse of their power. From now on, whenever I see a spider I'm going to call the firemen to get them to come get it.

How would you know it wasn't some exotic new species created by the aliens to prepare the world for their invasion?

I am so important I feel the need to let it be known like a liberal discovering the internets for the first time. Uh hur hur hur. I also wash myself with a rag on a stick.

you are absolutely right in having fear of spiders, because when we are afraid, we are here much more careful in Brazil, for being a tropical country they exist many accidents with spiders, scorpions and snakes but instead of killing the animals we tried to capture them so that the organs of health can identify the vaccine that should be applied, in case they have interest in knowing more on this subject they seek www.butantan.gov.br possesses a version in English, besides doing the vaccines for bitten of snakes, spiders, for example also make a vaccine for the influenza, against the infantile paralysis

Why does everybody hate spiders? My mom has a Mexican Red-Knee tarantula, and she's had it for the better part of 16 years. Beautiful creature, and it makes a great pet. All you have to do is clean the cage every week, give her water in a little dish with a sponge every day, and drop four or five crickets in the cage once a month to feed her.

And it's really cool to watch her shed her skin.

But anyways, that's a really neat pic, Mia.

Thank you...yeah, I can't do anything against it, sometimes when they come close to me I can't breathe, some kind of Phobia I suppose, but I'd love to get rid of it...and it's normal sarge that you're not afraid of spiders when you mom hat one...my brother had rats and I love them to death and I know people who are afraid of THEM...it just annoys me, especially since my boyfriend lives in the cellar of a house, hello 8 legged friends!

Oh, and the big spider on the picture doesn't scare me, it looks more like a "normal" animal, the one on the POTD freaks me out though if I met it, spiders like that just scare the hell out of me, poisonous or not...

It's not just that my mom has had one for a long time. I'm still cautious around spiders because I don't know how I'll react if one bites me (never been bitten by a spider before, so I don't know if I'm allergic to any of them or not). But just because I'm cautious doesn't mean I'm afraid. I just leave them alone and they catch and eat other bugs that I REALLY don't like... such as mosquitoes and flies.

Actually, the face (if you can call it like that) of the wolf spider looked kinda funny to me, very stupid expresson...and no, they don't scare me, they're just pictures! Some of them may be gross (alright, EXTREMELY GROSS) but that's it...but some of those things crawling over my body...now that would be a different story

/me wants this posting of spider pics to stop and goes ahead to start a new POTD...
