Mount St. Helens may blow top again

SEATTLE, Washington (AP) -- A strengthening series of earthquakes at Mount St. Helens prompted seismologists Sunday to warn that the once-devastating volcano may see a small explosion soon.

The U.S. Geological Survey issued a notice of volcanic unrest in response to the swarm of hundreds of earthquakes that began Thursday.

"The key issue is a small explosion without warning. That would be the major event that we're worried about right now," said Willie Scott, a geologist with the USGS office in Vancouver.

Its been over 24 years since the first and last time it errupted. The earthquakes are shallow so scientologists don't think its magma flow. I don't know if its pressure building up or not. If there is an erruption it wont be any where near the strength of the last one, unless it builds up for a very long time but even then the top is to weak to hold very much pressure plus the crater can contain some of the blast.

I'm thinking that it may be a good time this weekend to go on a trip to the mountain to see it before it possibly explodes. Good weather is being predicted.

Bah, I say let St Helens blow off some steam (literally), I'd be more worried about such activity happening at Mt Rainier.

Agreed, if helens goes it will more than likely just fill the crater. If Rainier goes many people will die and cities will be leveled. Glad I live in kitsap county.

Mount St Helens eruption warning

9:53AM, Sun Oct 3 2004

Scientists tracking renewed earthquake activity at Mount St Helens are warning that a second eruption may be brewing.

Officials evacuated a visitor centre at the Johnston Ridge Observatory about five miles from the volcano's crater as a safety precaution.

The warning level has been raised to a Level 3-Volcano Alert - meaning there is a potential hazard to life and property in the area, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Earlier, a Level 2-Volcano Advisory was in effect for Mount St Helens, about 100 miles south of Seattle.

Tom Pierson, a USGS geologist, told reporters that the alert level was raised because scientists detected low-frequency tremors, indicating that magma - molten rock underground - was moving in the volcano.

A second blast could top the eruption on Friday that spewed steam and ash for about 24 minutes to an altitude of 10,000 feet (3,050 metres).

You forgot about the ash fall

What I find hilarious about this whole thing, are the TV reporters on our local stations. They are the most over-exaggerating bunch of losers

I would like to see the mountain erupt mildly, but loudly and one of those reporters piss in his pants.

I heard on the news last night that they think that that small explosion a couple of days ago (with the steam and stuff) was just a "pre-eruption", and that a bigger, magma eruption is imminent (24-48 hours from now).

Guess where I was on today. Guess what Washington State Mountain errupted for the second time in a few days and third time in 24 years? Thats right man and it was awesome. Such a communal feeling to as everyone almost else there was happy to be there. I might post pictures later if I feel unlazy/busy.
