Here she is: 'Miss America' on CMT

The title says it all doesn't it huh

please read on LOL..........

By Olivia Barker, USA TODAY
Miss America, that apple-pie institution, has a home.
Eight months after being spurned by ABC, the pageant is moving to CMT, MTV's country-crooning cousin, pageant and network officials announced Monday. CMT will air its first pageant in January 2006, ending decades of traditional September crownings, in a two-year deal with renewal options through 2011.

The move is a rhinestone in the small Nashville channel's cap. But for Miss America, the shift to a relatively obscure corner of cable is at best a compromise — between being on a major network and being off the air — and at worst a disappointment, pageant watchers say.

"Given the circumstances, it's a good thing," says Leonard Horn, former Miss America CEO. Considering the pageant's 50-year broadcast history, "I don't think the program could survive without a television outlet. ... This is a relief."

If longtime fans can find it, that is. "I feel like they're going to alienate a whole segment of their viewership because not everybody knows CMT or would even watch CMT," says Miss America 1999 Nicole Johnson Baker. "It sounds so ridiculous: We go from ABC to CMT, and there's nothing in between?"

Pageant and network officials stress the demographic synergy between Miss America's and CMT's audiences — after all, neither Atlantic City nor Nashville are strangers to sequins. The pageant let "a lot" of cable networks "at least try on this crown," says Miss America CEO Art McMaster. "It came down to the one company that we felt was the best" to wear it.

But any talk about a literal move from Boardwalk Hall to Grand Ole Opry land is speculation, says pageant spokeswoman Jenni Glenn.

"Country music reflects an expression of Americana that's kind of unique and fundamental," just like Miss America, says Brian Graden, entertainment president of MTV Music Group, which oversees CMT. "It's a big title, which is great to have for an emerging network."

CMT averaged 308,000 primetime viewers during the first quarter of 2005. Even at its lowest point, last year's seventh and final ABC broadcast, the pageant pulled in an audience of 9.8 million, down from 33.1 million in 1988. Though no contract figures were released, CMT likely paid far less for the pageant than the $5.6 million ABC ponied up in 2003.

Many Miss America supporters and TV analysts have long agreed the show needs to be overhauled. But Paul Villadolid, CMT's vice president of programming and development, quashed rumors of an American Idol-style treatment, at least for now. "We are not taking a reality approach in 2006," he says.

The goal is to repackage the pageant "in a way that feels very, very CMT," while still honoring its "rich history," Villadolid says. The network plans to take advantage of its Viacom family, airing some pre-pageant programming on VH1.
