Hey, speaking of using windows media foundation now for various decoding, I just wanted to point out that winamp could also use it for encoding WMA and even AAC-LC

We're using the default WinVer.nsh script from the latest version of NSIS

The script only includes the following relevant lines:

Previous version of winamp did not do they, they did take a long time, but never crashed.

I think the problem is in the performance of your laptop and not in winamp, because 3660 is a lot for the pc

No, it's not the laptop. As I said earlier, it's a bug in the MP3 dll Winamp uses, so when a user has problematic mp3s, it crashes Winamp.

YES !!! One of the most important features of winamp imho , that , global hotkeys , milkdrop and nostalgia feelings+habit make me still use this program and recommend it all around .

So PLEASE put that damn option on an update asap , I know its nothing for you

Well, have to say... you guys have outdone yourselves .

See, Winamp wasn't "just another player" for some of us. It was the first thing we fired up when we turned on the computer. So, seeing it go down the drain for the last 10 years or so, really hurt . Bloath, bloath and more bloath... damn, I would've opted for RealPlayer if it wasn't for the terrible UI. On the other hand, important features, like plugin playback compatibility was getting worse (for example, there wasn't a single version of Winamp after 5.24 that played back MP3Pro files correctly with the Fraunhoffer MP3Pro plugin, until now ).

Smart move removing the bloath and making many features optional . Some suggestions if I may:

1) Make the media library completely optional . I know I can remove most of it's features from the installer, but not the media library itself. I had to remove it manually (rename or delete gen_ml.dll). Some of us, don't actually use any media library features, so we'd like to have the option to don't have it installed at all .

2) Make the "Rate item" menu entry in the playlist context menu optional (enable/disable). Once again, some of us like to remember the names of the songs/tracks we play and not have the option to even add stars (rating, whatever). Sure, having the option is nice, but make it optional .

3) You should probably bring back the old ID3 tag editor. It's been removed for a long time, I know, but see... with this tag editor, I have no idea which tag I'm editing *shrug*. The old tag editor, viewed both v1.0 and v2.0 tags and I knew exactly which tag I'm editing . You can also make this optional (have both styles of tag editors present ). I know that things looks more consistent, since most other formats (other than MP3) only have a single tag API (MP3 is the odd ball, I know), but I think you should "go with the flow" on the MP3 tag editor. It's not your fault that MP3 has 3 or 4 (I really have no idea, I believe ID3 v2.4 is the last) different tagging mechanisms, you're just making sure every single tagging option is available to the user, right .

4) You might want to add back (and make it optional, of course) the old Winamp behavior where it saves the .ini settings in the installation dir, not in the user's directory. I work in IT, so it's really important that every user has the exact same settings. I know that this can be easily done by copying the config dir in Roaming to the Default user dir, but still... it's kind of a hassle :-\.

Other than these few remarks, I think the new 5.8 version is top notch . This is actually the first version I'm running since 5.24 . Keep up the good work, I'm really excited to see what other improvements you add in future releases .

My Winamp works GREAT! I am sooooooo happy! I am by no means a computer wiz. That is why I loved WinAmp. As a novice it's drag and play format was so easy for me. So if these next questions seem noob like, please remember people of all skill levels love your player

Few questions:

1. Is there a way to have a pop-up window go over the WinAmp player? Right now when I open a file window WinAmp is always on top of it? It does the same thing with the internet window.

2. Is there a way to make the player larger not in length but in height? It is hard to see the player options because the player is so small. In past versions, I would stretch the player both by height and length. Now I can only do that one way.

So, I have an issue with tags, some mp3 without "genre" tag are now displaying "Psychobilly" instead of an empty field and it seems impossible to avoid, when i delete the "genre" tag it will appear again and again.
Deleting IDV1 tag will help only if you don't change anymore the tags, if you do, the field "Psychobilly" will appears again.

I suppose you already know this issue.

Hello, haven't posted in about 10 to 15 years now. Norton is freaking out and wont let me download winamp 5.8. Whats the deal? Is this Winamp dirty now a days? Or maybe there are some bad batch clones (not Star wars) out there with the same file name? Anyone else having issues downloading this do to an antivirus program?

Is there any problem with Winamp playing .ogg files? I'm asking, because I can't play my (bookmarked) online radio stations that serve their streams in ogg format. (I don't have any .ogg file in my computer to test directly that file type - the days of saving the music files in my PC are gone and today I use Winamp to play my favorite radio stations or randomly use Shoutcast.)
I can listen to the radios on my web browser via scr url link (as well as play them directly in their webpage), but I can't listen the stations on Winamp.
You can make a test yourself, if you wish. This is, for example, the link of one of the radio stations: http://93.190.141.15:8360/stream.ogg. It plays in the browser (Firefox), but not in Winamp. This last one says "Connecting..." forever.

I found UnicodeTaskbarFix not working anymore.

winamp can't play files that paths contain unicode.

Hmm... Strange. Go to Winamp's skins directory and delete Bento and Big Bento and re-install Winamp. You might have updated and installed Winamp 5.8 over another version (5.666, 5.7 or lower) and the installer might have skipped the skin installation. That's what I think.

No, this is a brand new computer. I fresh installed Winamp and only installed 5.666 Pro. Maybe it just won't work right on Win 11. A LOT of things don't. Ugh.

I finally figured it out. I was using 5.8 before and I installed 5.666. I installed 5.8 OVER 5.666 and there's the search!!!! Yay!! And all my preferences got saved, font, etc. Sorry!! But thanks for replying

Did the 5.8 re-install fix the "LOT of things" that don't work right on Win 11? Or are there other Winamp issues to watch out for? I'm on the fence about whether to upgrade to 11 or wait.

Everything works perfectly fine on Win 11 using 5.666 then 5.8 over top of it.



There are other things about Win 11 that are a huge PITA but there are fixes everywhere if you're willing to look for them. I was still on 7 but had used 10 other places and 11 at least you don't have those stupid tiles. I want it to look like Win 7 and, for the most part, it does AND it does other things BETTER so I'm FINALLY happy with it. PM me if you'd like to talk about it For Winamp, though, it's great. That would have been a deal breaker for me.

I'm curious if installing 5.8 over 5.666 will also preserve plugins that were specifically designed for 5.666 and will not install into a 5.8-only installation. I think I get the idea from this thread that it is possible it will. Thanks in advance.
