How to normalize volume of multiple songs ?

Is there a way to quickly normalize files in a given folder? I have about 20 songs in each folder, and I would like to use Winamp to process all these files at once to equalize their volume so that they all play at the same sound level.

Premium (read: not provided with my burner) versions of CD burning software often include this feature.

Is there a Winamp command or plugin that does that? If not, maybe someone knows about freeware that does. As it is, I have to adjust each song individually with the EQ presets function. This is time consuming and not very precise.

The Rocksteady plugin is a compressor, not a normalizer. The main problem with a compressor is that, in boosting the volume of quieter sounds, it reduces the dynamic range of the music. This can be useful to make recordings for car audio, where background noise is high, but is not what I am looking for.

I want to "normalize", that is to increase the volume of all sounds, without reducing dynamic range, so that the loudest sound level will be the same for all songs in a given folder.

Any other suggestions out there? I hope I won't have to plunk down $70 for Roxio CD Creator Platinum...

Nope, there's no good way to normalize with WinAmp.

I suggest you get Nero with the MP3 license.

Or, you could disk-write your MP3's to WAV, normalize those WAV's in AudioGrabber and then burn them with whichever run-of-the-mill burning program you currently have

In your "Where did these plugins go?" reference, I found a link to the AudioStocker plugin. This is a volume equalizer and a compressor. The compression can be set to "very soft", and the volume equalizer does the job I want. What little compression there might be is about undetectable.

I can now listen to all my files without thinking about volume compensation. When I decide to burn a CD, I can always deactivate the plugin and set the volume and EQ manually for each track. Or, considering how well Audiostocker works, I could convert its output directly to WAV (I think...)

It would be nice if a volume equalizer feature was an integral part of Winamp. Everyone who has more than one mp3 file has a need for this.

hmm have to wait for that new winamp feature, or, entering EQ values for every new MP3 downloaded every 15 seconds :/ that will take me approx. 3 years

I used a more simply way, but little more long...
CDex free software is able to normalize any MP3 and/or Wav files,
so you could to convert your MP3 to Wav, putting flag on "normalize"
option, then re-encode these wav files to MP3.
You can easily to rename your files, too, so you can have exactly
the title you want on the user's winamp playlist.

This procedure is enough long, but I sure you the result
is very good.

Well I have an idea. Have a tag put in mp3/ogg files that is called NORMAL_RATIO or something like that. When playing back a mp3/ogg, winamp will record the loudest volume level (before it reaches the equalizer of course). Then it will set a pre-amp value for this song (independant of the equalizer pre-amp). The next time the song was loaded, its volume would be modified by that pre-amp value. Having a pre-amp before the equalizer pre-amp only increases the cpu usage very marginally (88 thousand multiplies a second isn't a lot), and allows more flexibility.

There is a command line utility able to "massively" normalize and equalize WAV files, and even MP3 files if installing also ffmpeg (at ffmpeg dot org). The program is provided with .BAT files that you simply have to start for processing all multimedia files present in the current folder (see details in packages). So, by a simple click you launch automatically for all files:
- The MP3 (or other source) to WAV conversion
- The smart normalization + equalization (I find it very efficient !)
- The re-encoding to MP3 (with name extended with "_EQ")

This program is called Norqualizer. I don't know if I'm allowed to post links, so I suggest to go to sourceforge dot net or Google, and search for "norqualizer". You will find it easily.

Give ot a try!

There is a way...in winamp..just go to options > preferences > playlist > playback > Replay Gain > tick Use Replay Gain box then > amplification mode : normalize, untick : ask before writing Replay Gain to analysed files. Close... thats it ...
