This is what I mean by best downsizing filter (note the moirÃ©):

Photoshop offers two different bicubic settings (sharp or smooth) but neither fare any better (or at least used to in older versions). The problem seems to be that most programs use a filter kernel based on the source image size, which is correct for up- but wrong for downsizing (as with audio downsampling you have to remove frequencies that are above Nyquist in the target, else you get the nice artifacts seen above).

i use xnview for my picture viewing/converting/resizing

handles pretty much every format (even videos, audio, pdf), integrates into rightclick for converting, set wallpaper, and send to imageshack(<-pretty usefull)

I used my UltraPod II for the first shot. I took the second shot with my camera propped up on my half-rolled-down window (because it was freakin' cold outside, and I didn't feel like getting out of my truck again

).

First shot:
Shutter - 1 second
Aperture - F/2.6
Focal Length - 6 mm
ISO - 100

Second shot:
Shutter - 0.5 second
Aperture - F/3.5
Focal Length - 10 mm
ISO - 200

I have spent the whole afternoon washing my car. First through the big car was, then cleaning the wheels including the wet-look blackening of them, then polishing it and then hoovering it and polishing the interior. It took ages!!

Anyway, I tend to forget that my car actually looks quite good when not covered in muck, so I though I'd take some pictures to show off :P

Pics taken on D300 with sigma 10-20 in poor light @ ISO400+

Would love your opinions.

I've been wanting to get the 10-22mm lens for my Canon for a long time, now. Maybe one day.

I replaced my Sigma 12-24 which I loved with the 10-20 because I wanted to fit 77mm filters to it. I thought I'd regret selling the 12-24, but I've been very happy indeed with the 10-20

Took this shot today while I was wasting time (had today off). I was in Springville (~50 miles SSE of downtown Salt Lake City) at the base of the mountains of the Uinta National Forest looking due south. If you look closely, you can see the giant wind turbines at Moark Junction. They catch the wind coming through the canyon to (I assume) create electricity.

I'll try to head back down there when I have more time off and get decent pictures of the turbines.

This is what the wind mills look like in Minnesota. There are some fields with literally hundreds of them. They cost over $1 million each, and yet they're still profitable.

These are the ones in Moark Junction. It's a crappy picture, but the weather conditions weren't the best today. I don't know exactly how big these things are, but the blades have to be at least 80 feet long each. I've seen them being transported up and down the interstate every now and then... One blade at a time on a specially lengthened tractor-trailer. It's insane. The generator housings on these things are about as big as a Greyhound bus. o_o

The blades that travel through our town have a two-piece trailer - one piece that grabs one end (and has an axle) and a second piece that grabs the other end (and has a pair of axles). The two pieces of the trailer don't connect - apparently the blade is strong enough not to need that feature. The blade itself seems to serve as the rigid structure that keeps the rear axles straight and supportive. The segments of the stand (while in transport) look to have a diameter twice as wide and almost twice the height of a regular 53' box trailer. It's just strange and almost unbelievable that that they fit under bridges. It really amazes me when I see them. I hope they help us out in our fight for our hurting country's need for energy independence.

It takes about 7 large semi trucks to transport one winmill.

One for each blade, one for the nacelle, one for the hub (you can fit two hubs on one trailer), and then two or three for the pole, depending on how many pieces it comes in.

Hundreds of windmills are operating around Pincher Creek-Fort MacLeod, Others are at Magrath, Taber and a few other areas around here.

The biggest name is Vestas, but there are a couple of others also.

Despite the gear that you don't like, you seem to be able to get decent shots anyway. Knowing where to stand, how much to zoom, what to crop, where to put the manual settings etc. is something that even the most expensive camera won't give you.

I like the pictures - especially of the dog ("Daisy", right?).

Yeah, it's Daisy and some Polar Bears at the Portland Zoo. The pictures of Daisy were taken with a Kodak C743 and the older ones were with an earlier 2 megapixel model I owned.

It's not impossible to take good pictures in daylight or flash.

The shutter recycle time is sorta long even though the thing will shoot 3 frames at a time. Image stabilization would be nice.

Really, I was looking at a D60 package for $700. It comes with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Zoom, a 55-200mm f/4-5.6G AF-S DX VR Zoom and a 2GB SDHC flash card.

What do you guys think? I'd like a D90 or D300 too, but add a thousand... not in the budget. I have a good film SLR, but film is over.

Actually... I do like this Kodak camera. It uses regular NIMH AA batteries. Normal SD flash cards and has good color. It's just not up to snuff. I am used to having an SLR... but like I said film is done. You can't even get good lab work. Hey for $125 I got my value.

Very nice photo! Wouldn't notice him from a distance, would you? I saw a butterfly the other day that was green and had vein like markings- it looked just like a leaf. It's blending-in efforts didn't save it, though. An ant was trying to carry it away. It pays to be yourself, and it's ok to stand out from the crowd; that was the takeaway for me.
