Well, of course... it looks difficult when you start with milkdrop, but I've been doing this over the past two years and learned a few things since.

just one note: for each of your last presets i had to change the header to

Thanks for the hint. Very odd... on my machine it makes no difference. I'll try to keep it in mind and avoid any mention of shader4 in future.

Speaking of Dune, I reccommend Dune, messiah theme for listening to some of these presets, I've always loved that tune.

ive just downloaded each posted here, im absolutely blown away!
would you be able to write any shader tutorials/lessons? there was a couple in particular where id like to know what you do to get those glass balls and just acheive those effect in general just using shaders, great work! |

@Amandio C
The dunes ask for pyramids, don't they ![]() I have not worked much with shapes and I am surprised what can be done with them. When I started with milkdrop, there was only 1 (one !!) shape possible per shape section.. in total 4 shapes, which sounded a bit thin, so I never got into it and rather focused on the shaders. @ShadowHarlequin I must say I prefer doing presets over writing tutorials. I myself had no tutorial other than the "preset authoring" guide, but I was fascinated by the possibilities of shader programming, so I spent a lot of time with that. Shader programming is not difficult, all you need is a bit of mathematics, fantasy, and a lot of patience...when I count all the time spent with MD, I guess I spent approximately 20 hours per preset posted here. It IS work after all, and I don't want to add more work by writing tutorials. But then I don't make a secret of it, and will answer specific questions, if any. The glassballs are easy, and I will send you the fragment that does the trick if you can't find it in the code itself. Oh and BTW, shaders are the most powerful calculation tool ever devised, so don't say "...just using shaders". The computational power of shading processors is quite beyond that of the main processor in your PC ![]() |

sweet! but honor to whom honor is due: that particular code is by Cope.
![]() btw: http://openprocessing.org/visuals/?visualID=8058 "my" fractal code reimplemented as a java applet, horribly slow without shader power. ![]() |

Ah sorry... with all the mashups floating around it has become really difficult to trace the origin. Will rename it on the next review
![]() These attempts on Java remind me of the time when I implemented Mandelbrot fractals in TurboPascal on a 286... took a night for one picture. Why would you export pixelwise calculations to Java, i.e. the CPU ??? Clearly the GPU is by far better suited for such tasks ![]() |

It was a fun attempt and I'm working on an OpenGL version. Stupidly my graphics card doesn't support OpenCL.

Re: Funky illusions
I think funky illusions is the best visualization in milkdrop. So much so do I like it, that I used it for this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnibIqavQXs
I'm inspired to create my own based on the ideas in funky illusions. |

Here's a remix of on silent paths.
I added in some music response, but couldn't track down what randomizes the trees. So sometimes it looks like I intend it to when it loads, other times it doesn't. Although it will be fairly easy to tell which ones are the correct ones. |

This one is a little better. There's still one thing it does when you reload it that is kinda off. I also made it's response accommodate for change in frame rate more. First box I used it on ran it at like 11 fps, the second one was much higher and it changed how it looked a bit.

That does not seem to work for me - all I can see are flashing "naked" trees.... can't figure how you deleted the leaves although I tried to revert your code changes

Yeah, unfortunately it's a reason I stopped aggressively editing milkdrop. I could never get presets to come out consistent from one box to another, from version to version... and my OCD starts to set in.

I just registered on these forums to say:
Martin, you are an insane genius. Every one of your crazy visuals makes my soul bleed. I've been cycling through all my presets and every single time something comes up that astonishes me, I look up at the name, and sure enough - it's one of yours. Please keep making them, because you're in a league all of your own. But most of all: Thank you. Very much indeed. ![]() |
