Ratings cleared/changed when saving "song info"

Hi all
~30% of my songs are either loosing their ratings or the rating is set to 5 stars whenever I open the song info's (via click on "View Song Info") and then click on "OK". That happens even if I did not change anything.

I investigated it a bit but I don't find a pattern. It's not related to file name (i.e. special characters in file name), presence or absence of tags, physical parameters like bit rate etc.

I'm a bit clueless now about this strange behavior.
It looks a bit like this bug : http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....ghlight=rating but it happens not with every file.

Am using version 5.63
Cheers

you need to provide an info tool report, and tell us what file formats you're using, as well as OS.

I have not seen this in 5.63

netenana - you may also want to nip into the preferences and find the Media Library section. On the Library Options page you will find the third section down is called Save ratings to file for compatible formats (default: off)

It will help to tell us what that is set to. If it is turned OFF then the ratings you are loosing are just in the library itself. If it is turned ON then your ratings should be written to the actual music track.

Personally I like to just have the ratings listed in my library with the actual music tracks left alone and not fiddled with. I don't like ratings in the music as that is the music. Ratings live in the library only for me.

I can see a situation where you can have Winamp set to try and write to the file, but the file could be sitting on a read-only file server, which stops the update of ratings. I'll have a play around later in the weekend to see if I can get some weird combo to happen. (Though I have just installed the beta release so may get different results)

the problem with ratings only in the ML, is that the ML can and does corrupt and then u lose everything. or, if you move a file, u lose it then too. most files have metadata, and a rating is just more metadata, and the info then lives on, and in other apps and uses outside the ML.

to each his own of course, but its important to consider these points.

In my case I see ratings as personal. Not something I want to make everyone else who has access to my music agree with. I don't scrawl "4 stars" on my CDs or Vinyl. So it works best for me in the Media Library. (Which, of course, I back up)

Wonder if OP is coming back.... we need to find out where his ratings are being saved before making any sense of this. And as he has two people responding who use the two different ratings methods it should help narrow down the answer quicker.

I have some 65k+ files, so people appreciate my ratings, as they know they are mine and they typically don't want to bother themselves, although your point is well taken and its why I support multiple POPM/rating frames in tags, and that way each user could add/display their own rating to the same file.

winamp does now allow you to specify your email for POPM, so its a step in the right direction.
