what with the plugin submission system ?

Hi dear staff,

Yesterday, I've updated my Winamp Desk Band to 1.2.2-alpha on the winamp website, and I still see it published as version 1.1.0....
Isn't it supposed to be marked as unpublished until it's reviewed and republished again ?

I'm also wondering why the staff comments and evaluation don't change when a plugin is updated, because, as it happens with mine, it's becoming better with time, and I still have the evaluation from the old 0.1.0 version that sure deserved those 3.5 stars

thanks by advance,
D.

when i last looked at the review system yesterday nothing could be downloaded for testing, etc and it's been like that for a few days now for me. i can't see what's the state of your plugin since i'm at work and can't check it. if it's a re-submit then it should be re-evaluated anyway (that's how i do the ones i look at so i'm not too sure what/who/why that's been the case... ).

my guess is that the issues with the system are messing things up a bit at the moment i'll have a look when i get home tonight (~6hours to go)

thank you Daz !

By the way, what are your criteria for evaluating plugins ? how will you give n (for n in [0..5]) stars, for instance ?

it all comes down to how easy it is to install and get running, how well (and if need be how many of) the features work, if it doesn't destroy your winamp install and importantly if it does what it says. for some i refer against other plugins that are in the same field of operation to see how they compare to give a comparative rating with respect to them. also a fair bit can come down to how useful i think it is for expanding on the capabilities of Winamp.

with re-submissions i tend to give it a look over, seeing what's changed and how better (or worse at times) it fairs against the older version. then working on the previous review/rating i adjust/update accordingly so in some cases i may just increase one part by half a star if it's a minor but needed improvement, etc.

a lot can be subjective since if something doesn't seem intuitive then it can make it trickier to review and so the rating can potentially be lower. but in general i give each test as fair a review as i can and if need be i've left the odd comment in a review on what (i think) could help it along. it's all fun fun fun and of course i'm not open to bribery since if that happened i'd be down the pub spending it instead of reviewing things (when time permits)

i've just had a look and the description, etc only refers to 1.1.0 and the download i can't check since it's still broken my guess is that the system just defaulted back to 1.1.0 for you when the attempt to submit the changes, etc failed

it's still broken and the forums, etc are being moved to different servers at the moment (ie last/next few days) so that may be related to this. and you're not the only one having issues since i can't update to my current build of playlist loader which fixes a nasty bug so i'm bitched as well by it

i just tried again... doesn't seem to have had much effect :/

I'm starting to be really annoyed by the stupidity of this submission system...

If I can't manage to submit the plugin by next week, I'll just plainly remove it from the winamp site, and leave these forums altogether for good ...

i'm not sure what's happening for you now since the system is fine as i post back. what's the size of the exe you're submitting and also what are (if applicable) the format of the associated images since i find i can't submit with png ones though they are listed as supported :/

[edit]
just seen your edit and i understand where you're coming from but there's little us volunteers have say/control over the system so in most cases we're in the same boat as people submitting

i know i know, it's getting on my nerves to see an "AOL powered" website that should be powerful, well-designed, etc... with, in the end, so much inability to be "community-friendly"...

so, my exe is 239 KB fat
the text sizes haven't changed since the old ones
my image is 275x80, it's a gif, 3.4 KB
my thumbnail is 113x117, it's a gif too, 5.89 KB

looking at the requirements of image sizes, I see the max size for the thumbnail is 178 x75 pixels... restriction that didn't exist before...

if only the page could give an INFORMATIVE message, ot just tell us that something went wrong...

i'll try again tonight

in the name of the Winamp community, thank you for all DrO

ah, it could be the thumbnail at fault. i'll keep my eye out on any submissions tonight (in between 'quality time' with the girlfriend)

if you find it doesn't work, try it with just re-submitting the exe instead of the images and see if that works (since that should be fine for a quick re-submission test)

as for the site, etc a lot needs to be done and there are people willing to help out but AOL refuse to pay people for their time and aren't prepared to let the community help out it seems which is a shame.

fingers crossed something later on works for you!

it's in the review queue. just re-checked and the system has just gone down at least with it in the queue when it comes back up (soon i hope) then i can put it back out

[edit]
the rogue download server seems to be in use at the moment which explains things - since my playlist loader plugin shows as having around 1300 downloads when it was over 5000 the last time i checked - so that's the temp issue explained then

dzsemx: i've not reviewed your new version yet (since i said i was going to do it over the weekend when i can properly sit down and test yours and everyone else's fairly) and as i indicated in the post i just made, there's a rogue server active which tends to use old cached data so any old plugins can re-appear.

now i'm off out for one of the few chances i get to socialise with my girl friend

Lord Darius: just looking and someone has re-put the plugin through and it's still with the 1.1.0 installer. The system seems stable at the moment so if you can try it again i hope it'll work this time (getting frustrated over this as well since re-submits should be re-reviewed as well :/ )

i finally saw and managed to get the new 1.2.2 installer from the system before it started giving me 404's.

i've been told by one of the other reviewers that still in that state it should submit fine. only thing i can see now is that it won't currently let my increase the overall rating (which i feel is fair to do since i used the old version that was initially done on that review many moons ago before i was even active here). i'll have a check when i get up before work to see if it worked ok

[edit]
downloads are working again and i force re-submitted it again just incase. the rating thing i've just been told is a system bug so not much i can do on it

thanks Dro, seems it's been updated to the good version. *joy* ^_^

oh, yeah, Jump To File got highlighted, lol, I hadn't even noticed, that was just a random screenshot
For my part, it's one of the functions I use the most in the desk band, so it's maybe an unconscious choice...

[edit] i guess i'd have to submit it as a new plugin if i want a new rating... i'll think about it for the next version.

Pretty handy plugin indeed!
What I would like in a plugin like this is buttons to open/hide certain windows...certainly ML for those that use it...and of course I'd like it customizable so I can use DL too...perhaps you could hook buttons to hotkeys or something?

Just some thoughts...

horrible feature that if you ask me

with the rating, i'm going to see over the next day or so if i can get the overal rating on the plugin boosted since i think it deserves at least a full 4 star rating. if it doesn't work then we can always modify the comments to point to a newer submission, etc as needed depending on if you want to keep the old version up or not

@Joonas : read the doc I carefully wrote for my plugin
especially the "configuration.html" page,
especially the section entitled "Basic Configuration" :
Quote:
You can choose whether you want or not to display the toobar's title by checking or unchecking Show Title item on the menu.

Important note : In Windows XP, if the Lock the Taskbar option (see image above) is checked, the Show Title item won't appear, and you won't be able to move the desk band or to undock it.
You have to uncheck Lock the Taskbar in order to be able to display or hide the desk band's title, and to move and undock it.
@daz i don't care if it's new or updated, as long as i put my <3 into it, and that people <3 it too

Hmm, okay the title was easy enough to remove.

But how about the non-basic buttons? I don't see anything more than in future versions, which is exactly what I am referring too

ok for me to add buttons, but I'll have to contact every skin author to have them update their skin (and there are some i can't seem to be able to contact anymore )

which buttons do you need ?

hmmm... i think i'd better open a new thread

If you've seen Thinger from Winamp3 or saiverts Nxs Thinger you know what I mean...but this would be even better since its out of the way in the taskbar...Like a button to open/hide ML (which could be hardcoded) while I would like for example a button to show/hide Dynamic Library...this I guess shouldn't be hardcoded since its not a real part of Winamp...but then I thought it could be customized somehow...

But if it feels wrong don't implement it...I am just expressing wishes

Hello, another plugin author here trying to understand the system (and hoping resurrecting this thread for his own purposes is OK).

I submitted an update to my plugin (0.08 to 0.09) several times, the description would update but the executable was never updated, even when I made a note in the desc which I know someone saw because it was removed upon publishing.
To try and solve this I figured I'd delete the plugin and resubmit it again from scratch, but it is still in the system so I can't recreate it.

The plugin in question is 64th Note

it downloaded as 0.09 when i tried it hence why i put it through and removed the note since it had worked. i've rejected it so that should hopefully clear if from the system. if not just submit under a slightly different name (but basically the system sucks and there's not much we can get done to get it fixed)

If Lord Darius wants to implement a Thinger feature in his DeskBand thing he can use the source code for NxS Thinger which shows how I made my Thinger API, and other things.
Since Winamp Desk Band isn't a plugin it does not have access to all things a plugin has, but you can write a stub plugin that passes info beteween Winamp Desk Band and Winamp.
