clone baby

Have you heard about the first cloned baby being born? It was in the news yesterday! I don't believe it though until they get some independent scientists to prove it. They said in the next few weeks 5 more will be born. I wonder how many "attempts" (which always involves killing an embryo) they needed to clone them.
A scary thought...greetings from a brave new world....

[which always involves killing an embryo]eeeemmm I thought they fertilize the embryo with cells instead of normal sperm fertilisation?

yes but it goes wrong so often, you'll get a handicapped or "not being able to live on its own" embryo and then they'll kill it (or freeze it for further research I'm not that sure about it) . They needed so many to produce Dolly (the sheep) so I bet they tries several time to clone a human baby too
It just makes me mad

I'm sure someone out there, mostly people against cloning are going to sabotage that company.

Or, as Windude will put it: The Shadow Government will do something about this cloning business.

I like cloning, at least from the scientific viewpoint, as long as they don't overdo it.

And the people that just cloned...they're scary. I thought they were saying something about space aliens telling them to do it. *shiver*

No matter how many people are against it and no matter whether that company will be sabotaged or not, cloning is inevitable. Sooner or later it will become just another routine.

Cloning + genetic engineering = perfect babies

Cloning people, we are talking about cloning (unless I can come watch). IMHO, cloning of whole people = bad, cloning of human organs = good. Let's use the technology, but lets limit it I say

I'm not for cloning because there are too many complications. There is far too great a risk for side effects. If we could actually do it properly, then I wouldn't have real opinion. (Except that cloning is dangerous because it doesn't allow for proper evolution. There's a reason we reproduce sexually.) We are a long way from perfecting the art. We should be perfecting the art on animals, not humans.

A hah!

http://www.cnn.com/2002/HEALTH/12/28...can/index.html

Vatican slams cloning!

Religion is one thing, radical people are behind this. And it is unethical. The only good purpose you might be able to use cloning is for pets. Clone your cat to look just the same, or dog. Now I would support that, but humans are too complex to completely clone. And there are going to be a lot of backlashes because of this.

Cloning Cloning

So... We're not satisfied enough with making medical advances for people to lead better lives, no... Now, we must play God.

We were given two instruments for reproduction: The male and the female. Why must we meddle around with that and make clones? What's the point?

It's times like these that I remember a line from Jurassic Park.

"Yes but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think about whether or not they should."- Dr. Malcolm (Geoff Goldblum) Jurassic Park.

Granted, cloning is an interesting science, and I believe cloning specific organs to be donated is a very good idea that could help a lot of people.

But how far will this cloning thing go? Just make more and more clones of your younger self to harvest the organs and thus keep yourself forever young?

Are these clones really human? Do they thus possess human rights?

All I can say is GO CLONING! Anything that makes the world closer to what you see in sci-fi movies HAS to be good.

On a mor serious note, I'm all for the cloning of human tissues. If science could grow me a new intestine, I say go for it! As for the cloning of a person, I'm against it. People need to remember that this cloned baby--if it really exists--is genetically going to be as old at birth as the person it was cloned from.

It will be? I don't think that it will... Because look at Dolly. She was grown in a petrie dish, and was born as a lamb, which subsequently grew into a ewe. The clone will be born a baby, grow to a child and then adult. (Presuming it lives that long. Look at all of Dolly's dead clones.)

Yes, it will...this doesn't mean that the baby will be born in the same stage of development as the donor, but that its cells will be the same age as the donor's cells...so if the source cell came from a 40 year old person, then you have a baby with 40 year old cells, which probably won't live long, if at all, and will be subject to all the various health issues that you'd expect a person that's 40 years old to have...that's how the current tech works (which is to say, not well), and that's why we must work to rapidly extend our understanding of this tech, so that we can make it so that if a person that's 40 years old is cloned, you either get a clone who is developmentally 40 years old, or an infant close that is genetically identical to the donor, but with a much younger cellular age. Having clones that are the same cellular age as the donor just won't do.

If they didn't want to take 10% of my stuff, I'd say sign me up...but since they do, fuck them, I'll found my own sex cult, with blackjack, and hookers...in fact, forget the blackjack, and the hookers.
