Nintendo DS

Nintendo to launch double screen handheld console this side of christmas?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3416011.stm

I seriously hope this isn't the "wonder machine" that they are planning on showing at E3, if so, then errr, looks like my new found faith in Nintendo may just take a turn for the worse, sounds like the worst idea since the virtual boy a few years ago.

ick.

Don't take anything as etched in stone just yet. And you never know... if they do make something like this, it might have qualities or abilities that you really like. Hell, if it has as much memory as they speculate, then I'd buy one just for that. The damn thing is supposed to have twice the RAM that my computer has. Makes you wonder how fast the processor(s!) will be.

I have one word for the prospects of this future device....bleak. It seems quite possible that this too shall join the likes of virtual boy, Game.com and 3DO in the hardware hall of shame.

as for the processor in this new nintendo offering, the press release stated a ARM9 CPU (32-bit). seems decent for portables though nothing extrodanary.

heh. funny to see the reactions versus what was delivered. n e way i saw no sense in a new thread. nintendo will or has realeased a wi fi adapter for the ds. :: the ds needs a wi fi hotspot to get online. if you dont know where one is or dont want to bother with it, plug this into a pc and it makes a ds wi fi spot in your very home. quite cool i think, ~50 bucks, simple, easy, no monthly fees... im down. wi fi is becoming more and more popular. google is supposed to erect a free for everyone global wi fi isp. perhaps this thinger will become unnessecary.

Hang on, Nintendo build a console with a proprietary wireless function in it and then 12 months down the line release a dongle for your pc so you can connect it to the net?

Why didn't they just use an accepted wireless standard in the first place and cut out the need to have the dongle and pc involved?

Oh, wait a minute, silly me, I hear the cash cow coming home

Still, I'm down with it, anyone want to buy me one come Nov14th and ship to UK?

Well, reading one or two other articles about this, it seems that you don't need the dongle if you already have a wireless connection set up , plus points for nintendo there.

Mario Kart Launch however is down as 25th November in Europe, according to nintendo.com

/goes to pre-order...

indeed jones this thinger as i said its for those that dont bother with wireless, but it isnt required. it just makes wireless very simple regarding the ds. no seting up of networks and what not. which i greatly appreitiate. i very much like the word dongle though.

Haha, yeah, it's great eh, I've been using dongle for as far back as I can ever remember, probably the first instance I can recall was on a Sinclair QL home comp that was released so quickly into the shops in 85, half it's O/S was missing and it came bundled on a seperate dongle that plugged into one of the expansion ports, that and the Amiga tv output tuner that came with early Amigas as they hadn't built it onto the main board.

Dongles all around, Kludge was another term for those kind of things as well

I saw a DS at a store the other day, it was running Nintendogs at the moment, looked pretty cool, gfx wise that is.

Would love to get a DS, but there is one game i need for it and that's Tales Of Phantasia. There's a gba version of it already, but it was only released in japan
I would murder for a translated version.

im sure you knew about tales for the game cube yes? Tales of symphonia started out as tales of phantasia. but they changed the name for whatever marketing reason. but with crystal chronicles and even xenosaga headed for the ds. and the fact that symphonia was a game cube game (??? im not sure if it got released for other systems.) im sure we will probably have it pop up on the ds sooner or later.

I read about the other Tales- serie games, but i've only played a fan translation of the snes Tales of Phantasia version. ToP has two remakes apparently, one is for the psx and one for the gba, but the gba hasn't been translated or published outside of japan. It looks pretty cool though and is said to have a lot more sidequests and other stuff too.

But all in all i would just want a official version released outside of japan, i don't care which console version it is

Would make me buy a DS.

There's been no information other than some of the people at nintendo saying "we're making a Zelda for DS." Originally they said it was gonna be a Four Swords game, then that it wasn't gonna be a Four Swords game, then that it was gonna be all-stylus control, so... we don't know what it's gonna be, just that there will be one.
I wouldn't mind playing some wi-fi MarioKart with the forum guys, none of my friends own DSs, and I'm sure searching the network for people in my skill level would result in "No matches found. Sorry LuigiHann, nobody in the world is as bad as you"

that actually isnt half bad. its at a reasonable price too. (i wonder if it has shoulder buttons, i suppose it uses standard memory cards too?) ive seen a bunch of these portable music, vid, game things everywhere. gizmoto and what not. but they all seem super undersuported. i think most of them will end up in the old calculator drawer or on ebay before too long. do you remember that hd game thing that came out that was super ugly and lookd like a chair with buttons and analog controllers on its seat.

::edit:: minus a few points since it uses 2 aa though. my brother bought a game boy color back in the day and never played it beyond the things first two batteries life. (then traded it for cash as soon as he learnd of gamestops existance.) i can hardly bother to plug in my ds or sp. it probably munches those batteries 2 for 4 hours too.

6 face buttons, 2 shoulder buttons and a 16 way digital joypad. I dont /think/ it has a 'standard' solid state system (but then again what is 'standard'?) and the fact that it only has 64MB internal storage is pretty much my only quarm with the system, since you are pretty much obligated to buy some storage with it (a 1Gig card is £45 [$80])

It has some legacy actually, originating with the GP32 which had a strong cult following. The commmunity is already big because of it, and they ship the thing with an SDK to really promote development. I'm going to bag one as soon as I get a job (dont ask).

Some people are never happy. No 802.11e turbo frame bursting mode?! I r teh appalled!

Seriously tho its quite funny to see all the technical configuration screens on the DS when one is so used to the technical details being disassociated in cuddly cutesy games. I dont know, these kids with their subnet masks and their primary DNS servers, they'll be the death of me! [/codger]

Thing is, it all seems give and take at the minute...

Nintendo announce DS with propriertary wireless protocol (BOOOO)

Nintendo annouce that suddenly you'll be able to use your own WiFi out of the box (YAY!)

Nintendo in the same breath say that it's WEP only (BOOOO)

Can't win, guess it's the dongle then, oh wait, they forced me into buying it !!!, *shakes fist*

Like I need another reason to wish there was a McDonald's on campus. *sigh* I haven't put a whole lot of thought into whether the DS will work at the campus's existing hotspots, but I'll probably buy one of the USB doodads anyway just because there's not wi-fi in my dorm, and "I'm going to the library to play Mario Kart" is a tad rediculous.
Also Jones, did you see this?

Yeah, I've seen the wifi me, I didn't fancy doing it for a number of reasons...

I didn't have a compatible lan card
I didn't fancy flashing my bios with some homebrew code

Although it was tempting, I also looked at the passthru key thing that lets you boot ds code from the GBA slot if you have a flash card, people have DS roms running already that way, still not that big a scene yet to interest me.

I will say this though there was something doing the rounds with this flashme stuff that was similar to a virus , that when you flashed your bios and tried to use a commercial rom on it, not homebrew code mind, it would brick your ds, not funny at all.

Anyhow, I'm wondering how the nintendo wifi will work, I can imagine it's down to the game card itself , although I can't help but wonder if the game card itself might update the bios with those config screens that I linked up there, I don't particulary want to have to set up each game I buy to use wireless, I'd rather it be a global system setting, but we shall see, excitement building here,

I've found a old wireless router here at work that I'm gonna slap a spare wifi card into, set it up for wep only and only power it up when I wanna use the DS at home, so saved myself the pain of reconfiguring my main router and saved myself a few £££ for not having to buy the usb dongle...

im fairly certain you will have to adjust settings once for each game you buy(unless the default settings are perfect for you)

the whole way nintendo set it up seems fine to me....im just peeved that the "dongle" is only available at nintendos site and i cant just pick it up along with the game at the store.

they want to make everything so easy for newcomers but if you dont already have a wireless setup you need to order that dongle or spend more for a wirless router(people without credit cards are screwed)

.........?.

Yeah, there are times I think I finally understand Nintendo's strategy, and then they do something that's just WTF? The USB dongle should be bundled with the DS or with MarioKart, not nintendo.com-only.
Geez.

it would be hard to bundle it $$$ nintendo does not like to scare away buyers with dollar signs. ++ <3 and since that little thinger goes through all the trouble of a wireless router and setting up a network for you, im sure it wouldnt make sense to write off that 30$ or more. (cost of the hardware(dongle).) that little thinger is why im sure mcd's agreed to have a ds network in every restraunt. its no trouble just plug it in.

You're right about the bundling, I suppose, but I still think the convenience of the dongle is comprimised a bit by the relative inconvenience of having to order it off nintendo.com, especially to those who will probably never know it exists (i.e. people who don't read gaming news). Unless maybe they advertise it in the MarioKart packaging or something

nintendo has bundled so many things with games and systems over the years that not doing anything with the damn dongle is just stupid.

microphones, rumble paks, expansion paks, link cables, and just about anything they wanted to has been bundled....but not the one thing neccessary to their whole business strategy for its handheld system.

at the very least it should be available before the game comes out so i dont have to wait for it in the mail.

.........?.

it might be a good idea to make a throw away online game (almost no cost) or port a 64 game and ship it real quick with the dongle included. smash bros??? wy the hell havent we heard anything about smash ds? why dont they just make it 2d (handrawn) evn.
