Imagine hooking up four DSs with link cables and playing a GoldenEye deathmatch with three of your buddies. That would rock.

It's a handheld game system that Nintendo will release at the next E3.

Don't worry... a few years back, I was extremely out of the loop. It's not hard to get back in.

nintendo no longer has the rights to goldeneye(i think)

and microsoft has the rights to perfect dark so....

something simple like mario64 on the go would be just fine though.

.........?.

Both Golden Eye and Perfect Dark were developed by Rare which Nintendo has sold to Microsoft for a sizable amount. Nintendo was disappointed by Rare for not offering any titles for Gamecubes release, despite having a dev kit for sometime prior. So far Rare has released one game for the Xbox, Grabbed by the goolies, and they are currently working on a sequel of conkers bad for day for the Xbox. EA now owns the rights to Golden Eye and a follow up is now in development (by some of the same people who were on development team for Halo)

Stop thinking in the box, Sarge!

Imagine instead you're taking a stroll through a park during a lunch break. You whip out the DS and load up Mario Kart DS. Click Multiplayer on the touch-sensitive screen, wait for the area scan to complete, and find that there's a game with 6 other people already going on. You don't know where, but you join anyways and soon you're playing. No wires, not even line of sight. And player limit is increased to what the wireless tech can handle.

Whether this will be possible, don't know. But the DS does have wireless capability (802.11 something), and a touch screen, so who knows, maybe.

I've seen the wireless adapter for the GBAsp. Is that going to be built into the DS?

And I forsee lots of bad things coming from the touch-screen. Hell, nobody I know can even keep the screens on their Game Boys clean, and those aren't even touch sensitive.

But I digress. I'll just wait and see what Nintendo has in store for this system before making any ill judgements on it.

Why not build in blue tooth or 802.11g into a handheld? 'Twill Make wireless multiplayer more fun and easy.

802.11b would be more ideal for this. Both Bluetooth and 802.11g are too damn slow, and their distance isn't all that great. Besides, Bluetooth was intended for communication between devices that you wear on yourself, such as your cell phone and your PDA...but hell, you can probably play against the whole damn city block with something like 802.11a. Don't know how it would do with battery power, though.

ugh you are stupid.

802.11g was created to fix the problems of 802.11a which would be its limited range in an indoor environemnt. 5ghz frequencies have trouble going through solid objects. 802.11g has the same throughput as 802.11a and shares the 2.4ghz bandwidth that has the ability to go through walls better and is downgradedable to 802.11b. 802.11a is used for instances that operating in the cluttered 2.4ghz frequency range is not an option.

Unless you have say a 10dbi gain antenna and a fat power source i doubt you would be able to play against a city block let alone a city building. power restraints and antenna designes would limit the range of any portable game device to 30 or so feet.

Let me just jut in here. In case it wasn't clear when I said "the DS does have wireless capability (802.11 something)", that in fact does mean that wireless is built in.

And seeing as how the DS's screens are only marginally larger than a GBA screen (individually, that is) I bet the touch screen will be implemented with some form of stylus a la a PDA in mind.
