It's DVD which is the collector's edition. Also the regular is $55(USD) retail(4CDs). To avoid all that it's $50 if you purchase directly from Steam.

Nybergh, the game will scale easily to your computer. A guy down at the LANs is trying to run it with a Voodoo

Great game, must say. As everyone said, it was shorter than I was expecting. I was hoping for it to be much longer considering it was on 5 discs, but even with how short it came out to be, I still loved it.

I have yet to try Counter Strike: Source though.

Err..damn. The second game is shorter than the first, but I never finished the first, so I'll try to get a hold of the Valve 'gold' package which includes HL1 Source, HL2, CS Source, and DOD.

WARNING TO USERS OF LOW END GRAPHICS CARDS

Do not connect to steam if you wish to play HL2 again, there latest "update" has compleatly disabled my computer from playing the game. Worked fine before, then today it starts moaning about a nonsuported grapics card, and now refuses to run.

[edit] There is now a fix for this, alt tab out while the game is loading, wait for it to finish loading, bring it back up again. [edit]

Can I just express how CACK I think the HL2 release was handled.

First of all there is no CD version (in the UK), second you MUST have an internet connection... thats probably cut their sales in half for starters. I've heard so many people online complaining about the installer not working, steam being too busy to let them validate their copy, the game crashing in saves, the fact that it takes 4 hours to install, etc etc....

I'm sorry but this is just NOT acceptable, I for one think valve need to take a long hard look at making their software easier to install and use. I dont want a fuckin steam account, I dont want to pay 35 quid then sit for four hours waiting for it to install, I want to put a CD in a drive and play the damn game.

I still havent played the game myself, I'm waiting to pick up a university phonecard to use the modem (I BOUGHT FOR THIS) to install the damn game. Frankly I feel like a grade 'A' sucker for jumping through so many hoops for them.

The connecting to the internet took out 20,000 pirates. 20,000 times 50... I think you get the idea of how much they saved theoretically.(sp)http://www.anandtech.com/news/shownews.aspx?i=23415

Just get the online version, you'll save $5

, second you MUST have an internet connection

Refer to the above

I've heard so many people online complaining about the installer not working

Didn't happen to me. I check their forums, seems minimal.

, steam being too busy to let them validate their copy,

Only during the first few days. Its over now. It happened to any game they released. CS: Source beta, etc.

the game crashing in saves,

They fixed that like a week ago

the fact that it takes 4 hours to install,

Maybe four hours to validate? It shouldn't unless you have a really crappy computer. If it stalls, then I don't know.

etc etc....

You can justify valve's actions until you are blue in the face I still feel like I've been given the royal screw job, and I know lots of people who feel the same way.

The ironic thing is that loads of sites and reviews actually PRAISE the copy protection system as if it's something really innovative and clever. Its not clever... its overkill, just because it works (which it doesnt because cracks are already out) doesnt mean its good. Hey I just invented a copy protection system... you have to take your copy of game 'X' and your computer to the front door of the distributer and drop it off, 3-5 days later you'll get your computer back with the game installed... its a foolproof system! Totally impossible to pirate the game! Unfortunately its also a stupid fucking idea!

Yes, you state the truth. I am quite mad at how shitty steam is. You'd think they'd fix it put by now. But noooo it's only their only connection to all the games.

While using the validation system, Valve did consider the demographics. I doubt many play offline(no internet connection). This game costs and runs on quite a lot of money. If you cant afford a connection, you cant play this. Kind of cruel, yes. But you could get a crappy ISP for like $5/month now.

Anyways, #1 game played online of all time(playerbase): CounterStrike. People without internet can't play it and that's all Valve will consider.

I have Half-life, but I didn't have the net so I didn't get sucked in by CS, and I idin't think the main game was that good.

So when I get in new graphics card which will enable me to play HL2, I'm gonna get UT2004 instead.

My PC is pretty ninja to be frank, but I'm at university so I don't have an internet connection in my rented room. There are a thousand reasons people might not have an internet connection... plus people on dialup have to pay for the cost of a call while the game is validating.

...because they dont have to worry about people illegally making perfect copies of their games and giving them away to their friends and the internet.

Also, define "install".

install is the point from putting the disc into the machine and the point to where you are actually playing the game.

Realy?
It took me less than 30 seconds of advertising to be put off from ever touching an XBox.

I'm sorry, but the XBox is not worth it, its a crapy PC wich cant even play PC games (Or Double as a Wordprosessor), the games it can play are overpriced, dont have online caberbilities unless you shell out £29 for Xbox live. (Hell, I dont even LIKE multiplayer games.) The only thing that would even make me think of using one installing linux on it and using it as a "Gehto" (Or whatever the correct term for cheap and nasty is thease days) desktop. Even then I'ed rather get a 386, Consoles, I guess, just dont fufill my needs.

But thats probably just me...

..man, I realy do rant when I get going dont I?
