Flower

I wasn't actually planning to start any thread for this skin, but I recently have been having trouble fixing a seemingly endless array of design flaws. I need feedback on the skin's LCDs mainly, plus the general shading (I have gawked at it too long and it just look's wrong - but I don't know why).

There are a ton of useless but funky things I want to include for those with pcs that can handle the desktop alpha and animation abuse. For some of these ideas I have recieved both posative and (mostly) negative responses, but nothing really constructive.

So I would appreciate it if people would be harsh, but helpful .

Here it is, Flower:

And 2 funky useless features:
Armour cloaking and texture layer (in this case a camoflage texture)

Other things, such as the vis concept and EQ, I will release later. The components have just been started.

Nice nice! I would love to see all of the extra features that you can think of in there. You could just release two versions of it if the size was increaed by a lot.

This is spectacular. Really.

The only flaw in the shading that I can see is that there doesn't seem to be a consistant light source. The bottom arm is too obviously an identical copy of the top arm rotated 180 degrees. Remove the highlight bottom right and add one top left, and I think it'll be perfect!

I'm really excited about how this skin is going to pan out - breathtaking work.

Can't... get... jaw... off the... floor...

Will that thing fold up into like an egg shape? It looks incredible anyways but that would be the icing on the cake.

yeah, I was thinking that, too. Having it be able to fold up into an oval would be pretty sweet Kinda like a winshade.

Yeah I mirrored the skin and the shading because I couldn't be bothered doing it properly. I'll just stick with the "there are 2 light sources" excuse. It's better this way anyway, trust me.

As for the folding up into an egg shape, I had planned it when I drew the initial sketch, but realistically it can't be done. I have experimented with other animations for winshade though. I hope to have 2 winshade modes - one where the outer arms and "wings" are removed and the lcds retract towards the center of the skin, and another winshade that will be based on an idea by nirv (coder), originally intended to be implemented into Kaolla2.

The winshade wont appear for a while though. Components first!

Just use that redish orb in the center as a light sorce. That would work for the current shading as far as I can tell. It doesn't really matter however, since it is just digital art.

Very nice detailing and layout organization, the skins is sure to be a keeper. As for the desktop alpha issue, I really don't suggest you having a deskptop alpha on this skin, the distance around the edge is really too much of it was endabled. I'd suggest just having simeple antialias edges and be done with it.

Save the desktop alpha for the smaller shade modes.

god-damn!
i always spelt it kaolla, and was 'corrected' many times by people who should know better.

i swear your talent increases ten-fold with every skin you make.

my only criticism is that it isn't finished. i can't see any real shading bugs (other than it beong mirrored, but then if the light source is from the centre out, it's ok).

The LCD design was based on Kaolla(1), and that is what made the skin popular. I figured it would hold up in a wa3 skin... apparently not. Looks like the LCD will need a complete overhaul.

I designed this skin because I thought it would look cool. Not for practical use. But I the reason I am including 2 winshades is for people who don't like the outer crap or have small res desktops. Like I said before - it goes away and the lcds retract towards the center.

Actually it's not possible for the light source to be coming from the center ******ds. The highlights on the outer sections of the skin illustrate that .

Nice skin, very unique, although im a little worried about the usability, eg the fonts seem a little hard to read/small to me.
The graphics look excellent, I'd say a great deal better than kaolla (if I may) and I like it alot more and am pretty sure other will too.

Great job anyway, If I think of something constructive i'll post it.

The only problem there is that I didn't really like Kaolla I've never heard anyone say they didn't like it though, heh, so maybe I'm the only one.

I wanna know how you drew in so much detail, I always get jealous of artwork in that style, do you sit there for weeks with the airbrush or is there some quick randomly-generating-alien-stuff technique? Either way it looks amazing *sniff*

graphics are amazing.. really... so many details and i'm sure you'll make some great animations but this will not be the most functional skin... just a beautiful piece of digital art.

i think i view images on wa3 everyday, some wierd stuff like this one here, but as long as they have what i want and it functions ok i'll use it.
so far, there are a couple functions which i cant see yet on this skin.. but the style itself is fairly good, just needs some more improvements.

Neither. The skin was pretty much done in three parts - 2 afternoons for the main shell and underneath crap, and an unknown time (short periods over a week or so) for the lcds and the stuff around them. This shading is deceptively simple. Each section consists of 3 layers (basically) - The main shape and colour, the shadows and the highlights. Do this a few times over and you end up with something like Flower here .

Oh, and seriously, is it THAT hard to figure out how to use this? I mean, the buttons are pretty clear and aren't impossible to hit. The layout isn't exactly insane either.

Anyway, in case you hadn't already noticed, this skin is being design for aesthetics fist and foremost. Truthfully I doubt I would even use it for more than a day.

It's just fun.

IMHO: this piece shows how WA3 is where digital art meets a media player. I mainly use only the cbuttons in Wa...and I love impressive skins more than useful ones...it's only my opinion!!

Thanks for replying, you've given me the confidence to try something in the same vien for a future skin. I was starting to think you had a pet alien in a box somewhere that does all the art for ya Man everytime I open this thread I get fixated on those two pics of flower.
