No sound in Winamp

I just installed a new sound card (EMU 0404 USB), and I can't get any sound out of Winamp anymore. I have my output set to DirectSound and it's configured to use the correct sound card, but it still won't play anything.

I've also tried using ASIO, which will play, but the sound is very distorted.

I tried the suggestions in that post, but I'm still having problems. Actually, I think my problem's a little different. In ASIO, the music will play but there are many crackles. However, in DirectSound, the song won't play at all. I click the play button, the time in the top right of the window flashes 00:00 for a second, and then goes away.

Is the problem winamp specific?

I have the same problem using my Emu 404 under Vista, where you press play and nothing happens. I don't know why, but the solution I found is to set the sampling rate to 176 or 192 khz in the Emu software. Unfortunately you then can't use the SPDIF output though...
