Metadata advice

I am using Arrakis for playout. The problem is that the metadata doesn't work well. The templates are everything but "artist - title", for example one uses "title by artist. The good thing is that they have a couple of XML files. The problem is I haven't a clue on how to extract that information and send that to a text file in the "artist - title" format I need to use to trigger an ad server. Any thought would be greatly appreciated =-)
