mcaffee seems to throw up reports of port scans, syn port attacks and newtear attacks several times a day (irc tends to cause the syn port one). what are these, and whats causeing them? I know what a port scan is though...

LOL Don't worry about most of those though as a lot is what is known as 'Internet Chatter'. Loose or lost data packets trying to find where they are supposed to be..nothing to worry about - I know who's been doing most of mine and whilst the idiot is a pest, he/she is a dorky ameteaur that is doing little damage and hasn't been able to break through yet though got me with a massive reverse entry UDP packet the other night- couldn't do a thing for like 10mins, till I swapped i.p.'s tracked em and pinged the fook head to death...LMAO

Like I say though probably just chatter your picking up

Your ZA logs are stored in your windows directory. Usually C:\windows\Internet Logs\ These are dated through 24hr increments. Soon as you get 24hrs, a new log is created etc.

It shows originating i.p.(src) and destination i.p. (you)

I then check any thing suspicious via here

http://centralops.net/co/DomainDossier.aspx

If it then requires further action I'll report via the abuse report e-mail generally obtained those reports.

Never liked ZoneAlarm, its paranoia-ware. Every single request to a closed port is some evil attack. They want to scare you and make you think you are always under attack from some evil hacker to justify themselves.

Now, a firewall is defiantly a good thing to have, but I would take those "intrusion" attempts even the "high-rated" ones with a grain of salt.

I'd care more if I had anything on my comp that was important. Most important shit I have is homework, which I have at leat 2 backups of (this hard drive, usb drive, and school drive). Only thing that would piss me off is my mp3 conncetion, but with cable it would only take me a week or 2 to remember what all I had and re-download it. None of my sh*t is rare.

Well mine blocked 4489 intrusions so far, but no high rated ones. I guess its due to my modem that acts as a router.
