I joined the Marines

and today was my first day working out with them. holy shit, these guys are tough! i ran almost 2 miles (longer than i have in my whole life) then did 30-20's (situps for 30 seconds, rest for 20, times 4 = a set, 3 sets!) then we did leg lifts and these things when you are on your back reaching for your toes in the air) then we sprinted a little then did jumping jacks, mountain climbers, frieght trains, pushups, high stepping and pullups fast boot camp style. then we sprinted some more. i dont think ive ever done anything that physically strenuous before. i just felt it was topic worthy seeing as i am about to throw up and pass out

Seems to be a lot of ill health on the forum at the momment

How big are you Stttafffy. I work at the US Embassy from time to time and security is handled by the Marines. Bunch of biggest blokes I've ever seen - brick shit houses every single one.

I'm mildly depressed because I was invited to go Munro bagging in Scotland this week. But I couldn't afford the petrol cost to go up there, and as such am still here. Not that here isn't nice, I've been on cycling treks along ancient roman roads and other old rights of way instead.

I just would have liked to add to my munro tally!

Yeah, the mountains over a certain height in Scotland are munros. Hill walkers try and get as many as possible before they die

I tried the three peaks over the summer. The only snag being I was the driver, and decided I was going to climb them too. Thus, suffering from severe lack of sleep (having driven up to Ben Nevis from London overnight, then climbed the mountain) we had to abandon the expedition.

However, we did make separate journeys to Snowdon and Sca Fell - so I climbed all three, just not within the allocated 24 hours! More like 24 weeks, as it had to be fitted in around a walking holiday in the pyrenees, a road trip round Ireland, Germany, and Belgium, and a beach holiday in the south of France. And I wonder why I've got no money left!

i am 6'2" but only 155 lbs. tall and skinny. i still got a whole 6 months before my ship date to boot camp, so i got time there were a whole bunch of recruits there, people that had just started (me) to people who are going to boot camp on tuesday. you really can see a difference, if you lined us all up it would look be from wimpy to friggin buffed up. the sargeants there are made of rock. tough SOB's. if i got paired up with a gay guy i wouldnt make much of it. the military would, though, they make sure you KNOW that homosexuality is not tolerated. you can be gay, though, just dont ever tell anybody. but if someone told me they were gay i wouldnt report them or anything, heh.

We did the three peaks back in the late sixties, in a hugh old Humber Hawk, there were four of us and we all took a turn at the wheel, so it wasn't too bad. The roads were the biggest problem then, no motor ways. As soon as we got to Swowden we knew it was in the bag, straight up the railway track. 23hrs 14mins.

Just so this thread doesn't wander too far off topic, I've met a lot of service types who did this. It seemed to be a favourite assignment of the military, demanding fitness, planning and team work.

Yes, the friends I travelled with aren't very experienced drivers (neither of them owning a car, or having driven much in the years since they've passed their tests). Thus, because I travel more than 25000 miles a year by car, I was chosen. However, I wanted to climb and drive, and thus it didn't work

23h 14 doesn't seem too bad a time, considering the lack of the M6, which is kind of important

We also didn't take the easiest routes - went straight up the side of Ben Nevis from the Youth Hostel; and Snowdon we started on the miner's track, but veered off and climbed Y Llewedd first, and then went along the ridge - so our total time would have been appaling had we done it at once. Having said that, the road sections were very fast - London to Ben Nevis in Five hours - even with the closure of the M8 through Glasgow.

There were quite a few army types climbing it when we did (it was the longest day of the year), as well as firefighters.

Myself, I would stay clear of any Armed Service of any sort, although coming from a Military family I respect those who decide to enter them.
