Everybody...

- New: Windows Media Audio Ripping/Encoding (removed in latest build, sorry)

Please note that these builds are NOT official until the winamp.com site says so, ie. there still might be some required hotfixes before it all goes live (Watch This Space).
So, the builds ARE back up again but are unofficial. Watch that "space" for updates.

Not that I care it's gone, but why was WMA ripping/encoding removed? Or is it something you guys aren't allowed to talk about?

Is the official version of 5.091 going to be released today? Tomorrow? Saturday?

I rely on Winamp for all my TV-watching, so I really wanna know... A simple ETA would be nice.

STanger, wanderer hit it on the head: use Ogg Vorbis or mp3 LAME instead.

[edit]

unsupported Ogg ripper here

[Edit > DJ Egg]
Even better Ogg/Flac encoders here :-)

No ETA. There never was any ETA for any past release and nothing has changed. It'll be published at Winamp.com when it's ready and not before. Just wait patiently like the rest of us. Patience is a virtue.

Playlists

I am not sure if this is a bug, a wishlist, or a feature or what. But I use the ML a lot and when I open winamp the playlist section opens expanded and takes up that whole left section. I have about 130 playlists and it would be convenient for that to start collapsed.

Otherwise, I have no complaints. Thanks for the awesome releases Winamp Team.

Nothing's changed there either. Same as it's always been in the ML. Double-clicking on "Playlists" will expand/collapse it. Double-clicking other "roots" in the left panel will do the same. Then as long as you properly shut down Winamp (Winamp retains settings upon a proper shutdown), the next time you start Winamp and open the ML your preferences will have been saved.

Thanks Nunzio. I figured nothing had changed. I was just hoping that someday everything in that left panel could start collapsed. It's a minor annoyance, so I am not going to fret. But maybe in future releases....?

Thanks for all of your hard work guys!

Well by next year everything might into 64 Bit so I wonder what changes would that make for Winamp by next year and how are they going to make it compatible with Microsoft Windows Longhorn!

As far as I know, the AC3 codec can be 5.1 (which is Dolby Surround, right?).

And I've played true High Definition video on Winamp - a sample video clip from 24, at a screen resolution of 1280 x 720). It was spectacular, but my CPU usage went up to like 85% while playing this video.

But what exactly are you guys talking about? Winamp TV in HD? Not gonna happen, at least in the next few years.

It would be sweet though but next kind HD are 1080p and Blue Ray DVDs also super Audio and Dual Discs so how is Winamp going to be compatible with those?

Again, keep checking the first post in this thread for updates...
Quote:
19th May - new builds
in_wm volume bugfix (see below), enc_wma removed for now.
I'll say it again... Watch that "space" for updates.

Quoted from that first post in this thread...
Quote:
Please note that these builds are NOT official until the winamp.com site says so, ie. there still might be some required hotfixes before it all goes live (Watch This Space).
So... if you currently have 5.091 then it is NOT an official release and is use-at-your-own-risk.

Best solution? Wait for when Winamp.com is updated with an OFFICIAL release, and all bugs have been worked out.

Choices:
  1. Use the unofficial 5.091 build you now have which may still contain bugs, but don't complain
  2. Roll back temporarily to either 5.08d or 5.08e (only if you have DRM-protected WMA files)
  3. Wait for the official bug-free release of 5.091 at Winamp.com

Don't email or PM me concerning Winamp. Instead, either start a NEW TOPIC or post a REPLY in the appropriate thread in these forums. This will also benefit others who may have a similar question or problem. But before posting, please first Search the forums and read all FAQs and all Sticky threads.

Putting a file on a large website isn't simply a matter of copying to a folder =)

We go ahead and start the "put the file on the website" process when we think we have a solid build - but sometimes the beta team or the early adopters find another bug or two early.

Yes, that's one reason why the builds are there - so you lucky forumers can test it and report bugs. So far, we've found and fixed one bug with in_wm. Please test and confirm that all previously reported 5.09 bugs are now fixed. Thanks.

(Well, you only need to post here if you can confirm that something isn't fixed, or if you can reproduce any other bug that isn't already known)

[edit] plus what benski said :-)

Well your specific question was why was the WMA encoder/ripper removed. It's already explained in the first post in this thread, along with other specifics. It's a temporary thing, until other issues can be resolved. So, your answer was already there.

Sure... if anybody discovers a *new* bug/problem that hasn't already been addressed, then by all means, bring it up in this thread. Then Egg, myself, or someone else on the beta testing team will notify Tag and/or Ben and then they can address it before 5.091 goes "final" and is offered for download at Winamp.com as an official release. The beta testers have extensively (and still are) testing it, as well as new builds that already have problems addressed, and are in constant dialog with the Dev team. AFAIK most of the bugs are known and are being addressed, but if you discover something new then let us know.

Remember... these builds are to be considered "test" builds and are not complete (official) yet.

To DJ Egg, Nunzio and the Winamp team:

For some reason, the file sharing world doesn't like to tell people that this is a "test" build. So this build showed up on "the scene", just like 5.09, and tons of newbies don't know it's actually a test build, and many probably think it's the final release.

Why is that? I mean, they only could have grabbed it from here right? And it's already pretty clear that it's a test build.

So I guess I bring this up thinking that it's in the best interest of the Winamp developers to make sure no one is confused and thinks this is the official release.

Well, maybe we shouldn't have used the word "test". Could be confusing I guess.

Let's just say "unofficial" and leave it at that. When you see 5.091 actually offered for download at winamp.com itself, and not just here in these forums, then it's "official" (and most likely bug-free).

Isn't it somewhat of bad publicity that for so long, with each new release of Winamp 5.x, that "Fixed a critical security flaw" message is still shown? I mean, there hasn't been any critical security flaw since that version that did have it.

Does Nullsoft really think this will actually attract people to download a newer version time and time again? I actually think about it reversly - "what, every new version of Winamp had a critical security flaw? WTF? I'm not getting this again and again and again and again..."

This aside, thanks for a new release. Waiting for the next one!
