My first skin. Here we go....

OK, gang. I've been reading these posts for a while now and am a little nervous about getting shot all to hell over my first skin. I have two young daughters and thought this would make for a nice first theme to a skin. It took me about 40 hours to do in all. I did NOT do it as a pervert! lol There was only one other Mary Kate and Ashley skin on the site, my kids *sigh* love them, and I thought it would make for a decent subject.

I have a LOT to learn about skinning, but I had a blast doing this one. My next one will be something a little more *ahem* adult oriented. This one's in cue to be processed; now I'll start on #2.

Again, sorry about the subject matter. I can't wait to get to the level of the really wonderful skins I've seen on this board. I didn't realize making skins by hand was so difficult.

Sorry...

Sorry about the double post, guys. I'm trying to get the other one deleted. It's not working for me, so I sent a note to the MODs asking them to take the other one down. I'm just tired. Please reply to this thread, not the other one.

Hi czietuh, Welcome to "Skin Love" and my condolences on entering the "darkside" also known as skinning lol. Once it's in your blood, it's a hard habit to kick.

No need to apologize for the theme. Skin for yourself first, make something you like, something you care about. If you like the subject, or someone you know does, it's all good .

From the looks of this skin, you care a great deal for your daughters. This is not slapped together, that's for darn sure. Lots of detail and personal touches went into this and for a first skin, its very good. It's adorable in fact. .

Any chance you can upload a zip file somewhere so we can give it a test run before it's published? If not, it's ok. We'll just wait with baited breath for it to be published Keep us posted and keep up the good work!

Great

What better motivation to do a skin than knowing someone will immediately appreciate it. Although I'm not a fan, I can see that you definitely put quite a bit of work into this. Keep it up and I look forward to seeing your next skin.

lol Sorry Lynx :)

Sorry about that, Lynx. For those of you interested, Lynx has only positives to say, only wondering why I didn't use the buttons I made for the MB on the main graphic. The answer: I should have but I didn't notice they were better until I posted the skin. lol I agree with you Lynx. After it gets published I may go back and make the changes.

Thanx for all the comps! It makes me feel good all the hours go noticed here.

Simon: It's Mary Kate and Ashley (all of 15 now) from Full House and a bunch of crappy movies I have to sit through over and over and over....

This is a great first skin. From what we can tell from the screenshot, everything is skinned, the image placement looks immaculate (to my untrained non-image skinning eye). I love the colour scheme as well. The only thing to my dislike is the cbuttons. I agree they would look better if they were comme mb, however this could present problems with the image behind. Looking forward to seeing this one published.

That looks damn good for a first skin. That would look damn good for a tenth skin!
Coupla things:
The MB buttons are definately better than the CButtons. Maybe you can do an update at some point.
With things such as the volume and balance bars, you can cut up the bmp so it's thinner. that way you can have very thin buttons (ie. less obtrusive) or no buttons at all. My last coupla skins had no vol/bal buttons, I just animated the volume bar.

between the lines, what kind of work do you do czietuh. Bet it has something to do with graphics. Since this is your first skin and it looks so good. Specially compared to my first one, or even maybe my last few ones, or even all my skins

Hey czietuh, Welcome to skin love!
That's a nice skin you got there! Doesn't look like a first skin at all.
The only thing I can find to pick on is that the pl-buttons are different from the rest of the skin. Xept from that, it's really nice.
Hope you stick around!

Nailed it Simon....

Yeah, Simon, I'm a graphic artist. lol Thanx for noticing!

I agree with everyone that the main buttons look a tad out of place. I really need to change them to the MB buttons asap. I think what happened is that I did them, and many hours later did the MB buttons. I was getting a bit sick of working on it , so I didn't notice what all of you have. You guys are right.

It's nice getting good constuctive critisism like this on a board, balanced with compliments. I don't think I've been on a board where this has happened yet. Thanx again, guys.

Welcome! I am looking forward to your more 'adult oriented' skin. I admit it, I'm a pervert.

This one has some good imagination in it fa sha ... maybe a little more work in the PL would carry it over the top. Regardless, it'll be great for the kids. Ready for a dowmload link puweeze ... and many more!

Welcome to skin love. Kicking job on yr first. You also have my sympathies... I have a 5 year old girl here who is addicted to the twins as well. We have seen every movie 600 times. If it makes you feel any better just tell yourself what I do when I have to watch them... "Cheer up! In about six years they'll be doing porno for drug money! " Even though it probably isn't true, I've found it makes the films easier to swallow.

ps: one suggestion, you might consider animating the vol/bal buttons instead of using the regular ones. It would remove some of the "cluttered" look from the main window pics.

Animating the vol/bal buttons?

Thanx for the sympathies and the comps. Since I am new at this, I was not aware that one could animate the vol/bal buttons. Do you know where I can find an example of this? It sounds interesting.

Once my first skin gets published, I'll get around to all these changes. So far, I've only seen things posted that I also noticed. Good critiques! I just need to take a few days off of this first skin lol

It's actually really simple. Open the .bmp (say volume, for example) in MSPaint, then change the pic size so the buttons get chopped off of the bottom. Now it will just cycle through the 28 frames... no button. Draw your animation from frame to frame and voila. You can chop several of the bmp files for different effects. (Like a barless eq.) I have a thread in here somewhere about my first pic skin, Angelina Jolie in Black. That skin has animated vol/bal, as well as a shortened posbar. (3 px high.) Woodshop is another good animated one to see.

Very nice stuff, czietuh, and since you're a newbie, I won't give you a ribbing for the subject matter like I did to poor Duk.

As cyana mentioned, if you're interesting in making changes, now is the time to do them. You can update a submission while it's waiting for publication.

After publication, you have to resubmit it, which can take a few months to process.

Do let us know when it's available for DL. I need to something to feed my daughter besides Duk's Britney skin...

Nice skins!

I just took a look at the crock, woodshop, JenMc and AJ skins....wow! I had NO idea you could do stuff like that. I'm still not too sure exactly how to get the vol/bal buttons to be smaller, but Imma try my best to figure it out. Those are SO much better than the bigger buttons, esp for doing the human picture skins.

Oh, and Blackadder, I bet solid money on them doing porno in a few years. lol I think they've used at least 10 of their 15 minutes. I'm sure the fakers are already doing a countdown to their 18th. :P

Imma do a few revisions today to the PL buttons and make them like the MB ones, then I'll go ahead and post a wsz of the skin for you guys to take a look at the windowshades, etc.

New Buttons....

Well, I redid the buttons on the main part and, suprise suprise, everyone was right. Thanx for all the input, I think I'm finally happy with the way it looks. The old buttons WERE out of place; these new ones fit pretty well with the rest of the design.

There were some people who wanted to DL this skin before it got published, plus the others who don't really want an MK&A skin can take it for a test drive if you'd like. Click here to get the MK&Amp.

I'm also republishing my skin to the site with the new buttons. Thanx again for all the help on this. It looks a ton better with only a minor change!

czietuh = Cheetah! Ah, I finally got it. See, I'm not so terribly slow....

czietuh, to make the vol and bal buttons smaller, you can trim off the bottoms of volume.bmp and balance.bmp, just crop them down to shorter bitmaps.

In fact, if you're feeling brave, trim the whole button off. Then you can hand draw any ol' thing you want in on each animation frame. Check out Simon's Croq Amp for an example.

You can apply the same trick to posbar to make it a little more streamlined if you wish (not saying this skin needs, just tricks to store in your toolkit).

I haven't taken the skin for a spin yet, but will do so soon. I did DL it and peeked inside the zip. *sigh* No Mikro.

As long as we're sucking you into this skin business (you too, RedVixen), there's a little Winamp plug-in we in this forum enjoy skinning. It's called MirkoAmp and can be found here: MikroAmp. And I just happen to have a template for the Mikroskin here: Mikro Template

See -- skinning is an addictive and you'll never get out alive... heh.

really nice skin; don't see too many people skins which are actually "skinned".

one suggestion though--> incorporate the highlighted text bar (which is black at the moment) in the playlist to better match the color scheme

otherwise, heck of a skin

Fini...(I hope)

Ok. *pant* *pant* I really, really honestly believe I'm done now. PLEASE don't give me anymore good suggestions! lol Honestly though, you guys made my skin a TON better with what you've told me.

1) I redid the vol/bal slider into animated sliders. Wow, is that a neat little trick! It makes the faces that much more noticable, not having those big, bulky buttons in the way.

2) I trimmed the POS slider down to a square, also so one can see the faces that much better. I'll take the little "doesn't have a depressed state bug" in favor of more visibility.

3) I redid all the cursors to pink/purple ones that fit the theme a little better.

All of these ideas came from this board to make this a better skin. THANX! I am VERY pleased with the animated vol/bal bars; I'm glad you guys taught me that.

Click here to get the finished MK&Amp skin!

Once you take a new look at this skin, LMK what ya'll think. I hate the fact this was so much fun; I'll never sleep again. Thanx *sigh*
