mp4 video

Why I can't play mp4 video on winamp? I have the mp4 splitter installed and its decoders.. wmp plays it well..

looks like in_mp4 thinks every .mp4 files are music? that should be corrected.....

Winamp has not native support for video, it's not a bug, it just doesn't support it.

I know it relies on directshow to play video stuff, but couldn't it automatically open files with directshow plugin when he sees directshow does supports it ? it's kinda annoying to add extensions one by one.. and more annoying is the need to uninstall in_mp4..

You don't need to uninstall in_mp4. Just remove MP4 from the Extension List in in_mp4 config and put it in in_dshow config instead.

As explained in the link provided by Sawg, that way you'll have support for both m4a audio and mp4 video.

yeah I know directshow can decode it and that we'll need to add the .mp4 extension in ds plugin but do you think it's the user who has to do all the work? imho if you try to use winamp to open something, it should know what kind of files it can actually decode and with what plugin.. we, users, aren't smart enough, you know? at least this is the microsoft way and it's working..

It's because Winamp does not support MP4 video. There are workarounds, but they are just that.

Winamp relies entirely on the input plugins to decode files.
The input plugins rely entirely on the file extension.
If you want in_dshow to handle MP4 instead of in_mp4, then you have to manually configure the respective input plugins accordingly.

That is the way that it is, and without a major rewrite of the entire Winamp core engine, that's the way it's going to stay.

We do not support MP4 video by default because we aren't licensed to decode MPEG-4, H.263, AVC/H.264 video content. If and when we get such a license, then we will make in_mp4 also decode video content.

For me personally Winamp has never been a good video player. I just use VLC Media Player to play all my videos. Plays 95% of everything I've ever downloaded. I understand about the plug-ins and such Winamp needs to play certain files, but even then Winamp in personal experiences crashes more or has more video errors.

Great audio player though.

I use VLC Media as well. Downloaded some mp4 videos at http://www.mp4point.com/ and it works fine.

Winamp is still awesome though
